Ultimate Frisbee Essay
Ultimate frisbee is a modern game which requires a flying disc and extreme skill to master. This game was first introduced by a man named Joel Silver in 1968 when he presented his idea to the Columbia High School Student Council in Maplewood, NJ. Within one year the very first game of ultimate frisbee was played among the Columbia High School students using a Wham-O Master disc. Eventually a team was formed at that high school by 1969 and games were held regularly in the parking lot of their school. They accomplished these games using make-shift goal lines such as telephone poles and piles of the players jackets formed into a line. Unbeknownst to them, they would eventually play their very first interscholastic game of ultimate frisbee later …show more content…
Universities such as Rutgers and Princeton became involved, forming teams and battling for the win. Finally in 1976 Yale held a tournament against Rutgers and renamed it to the National Ultimate Frisbee Championship. Ultimate Frisbee, like all sports, requires intense physical and mental skills to be played well. Players must first master the use of the frisbee by learning how it is held, different ways it can be tossed and how your throw will affect the ultimate outcome. Additionally, teams must learn how to work together and establish successful ways to communicate on the field. These needs can only be accomplished through training and practice which can be done indoors or outdoors as the sport can be played almost anywhere. Schools across the country use this sport to teach students the importance of physical activity as wells as team building. This sport is constantly growing and grabbing the interests of students everywhere. It is unique in that it incorporates the use of a flying disc with an idea similar to soccer of using passing and teamwork to land the frisbee into their goal. Each team must also block the other and try to prevent the opposing team from scoring a goal. This can be done by physically blocking players from the goal and trying to steal the frisbee by knocking it out of each other’s hands. Overall, Ultimate Frisbee is an ever-growing sport which is unique as well as

Ultimate frisbee is a non-contact sport played in a team using a disc (frisbee). The rules are pretty simple. The game starts of with each team lining up at their end zone and the defense throws the frisbee to the offense. The person that is holding the frisbee is not allowed to move, if they do move then the frisbee goes to the opposing team. They have a total of ten seconds to pass it to their teammate. The frisbee can be thrown in any direction in order to advance, it just has to be catched by a teammate. If the teammate does not catch the frisbee, it automatically goes to the opposing team. If the other team tries to block it, but they fail to catch it, it goes to the same team that threw it. Every time the offense completes a pass in the…

Flickerball was created by Davidson College in 1951 for an alternative for football. Flickerball is very similar to American football. It is usually played in gym classes. The offensive game rules are that players are divided into two equal teams. One team taking the ball at their 10 yard line starts the game. Only passing and catching may advance the football. Passes may be overhand, underhand, or sidearm and in any direction but must go at least 5 years. Hand-offs are illegal. Players most stop once they have caught the ball and past it within 5 seconds. If the ball touches the ground or floor the ball goes to the other team. There are no downs as the ball is continuously in play. It is a touch down when a player catches a pass in the end zone. All touchdowns are worth 1 point. The game is played best when the offensive team spreads out and keeps moving using the entire field.…

Basketball was invented in December 1891 by the Canadian clergyman, educator, and physician James Naismith. Naismith introduced the game when we were an instructor at the Young Men's Christian Association Training School (now Springfield College) in Springfield, Massachusetts. At the request of his superior, Dr. Luther H. Gulick, he organized a vigorous recreation suitable for indoor winter play. The game involved elements of American football, soccer, and hockey, and the first ball used was a soccer ball. Teams had nine players, and the goals were wooden peach baskets affixed to the walls. By 1897-1898, teams of five became standard. The game rapidly spread nationwide and to Canada and other parts of the world, played by both women and men; it also became a popular informal outdoor game. U.S. servicemen in World War II (1939-1945) popularized the sport in many other countries.…

Paintball was not really a sport when it started out. The forestry department and logging companies were using spray paint to mark trees, and that took way too long, so they got in touch with a company called "Nelson Paints", who had made squirt guns that used paint in the 1940's, to come up with an easier way to mark the trees. Charles Nelson started working on pelletized paint, and so he made a cast for pellets of paint with some wood. The caliber of the pellet was .68, and that is still the same caliber for the pellets used to this day. So then Nelson Paints asked another called on "Crossman", a company that still makes BB guns, to come up with a sort of airsoft gun that could shoot these pellets of paint. The gun they made together is called the Crossman 700, or the Nelspot 707. That was the first…

The game begins with the teams lining up on opposite sides of the field from each other and throwing the Frisbee down to the other team on the other side the field, which is called a "Huck". When receiving the Frisbee from the huck the team that received the Frisbee tries to make their way down field to the other end zone. The origin of professional football can be traced back to 1892, with William "Pudge" Heffelfinger's $500 contract to play in a game for the Allegheny Athletic Association against the Pittsburgh Athletic Club. In 1920 the American Professional Football Association was formed. This league changed its name to the National Football League (NFL) two years later, and eventually became the major league of American football. Primarily a sport of Midwestern industrial towns in the United States, professional football eventually became a national phenomenon. Football's increasing popularity is usually traced to the 1958 NFL Championship Game, a contest that has been dubbed the "Greatest Game Ever Played". A rival league to the NFL, the American Football League (AFL), began play in 1960; the pressure it put on the senior league led to a merger between the two leagues and the…

That was one of the moments I realized that club Ultimate Frisbee gave me as much of an education as my math or biology classes. Looking back, I realize that I learned a lot more from my Ultimate Frisbee team than how to throw a flick or play zone defense. I entered college as a shy, awkward girl who hadn’t needed to make new friends since the sixth grade. I left college as a confident, assertive adult who understood the implications of accountability and responsibility, and not just their dictionary meaning. It turns out that there are life lessons to be found from that white plastic Frisbee, the Ultimate shorts that are too long and the cheesy cheers at the end of the game. Here are five of my favorites:…
