William G. Morgan's Volleyball (YMCA)

William G. Morgan created volleyball in 1895 as a YMCA P.E. director in the town of Holyoke, Massachusetts.. It was first called mintonette. The name came from the game called badminton. Mintonette, later known as volleyball, took certain things from tennis and handball and was designed to be an indoor sport. The game was intended to be better on a person’s body than basketball and was aimed more towards the older members of the YMCA while still requiring athletic ability. The first rules included a net that was 6 ft 6 tall, a court that was 25 ft by 50 ft big, and any number of players on the court at any given time. Each game consisted of nine innings with three serves per team per inning and you could touch the ball as many times as you wanted before sending it over the net. If a serve was messed up, a second try was allowed. Hitting the ball into the net on the 2nd though was a foul and caused a loss of point. In 1896 Alfred Halsted observed a game and noticed its volleying nature. He called it volleyball and it soon became known as volleyball everywhere. Once the ball is inflated it must also weigh in the range of 260 and 280 grams. Today’s net has a varying height based on the age of the players, is 1 meter in width, and has two antennas attached on the sides that are both 1.8 meters above the net with a 10 mm diameter.
