The game of volleyball is a fun way to exercise and develop many athletic skills. It helps you develop eye hand coordination and fast reflexes. It can be played indoors and outdoors, including on sand. The game is played with a volleyball,which is a soft light ball that is easy to hit and bump. While playing the game of volleyball, you need a ball that’s not too heavy or hard (like a basketball or football) which makes it easier to play the game.The volleyball helps fulfill the need to have fun and enjoy the sport of volleyball without hurting yourself or others. There are two major materials that are used to make a volleyball.The most significant one is faux or synthetic leather, most volleyballs are made out of this. It offers a good grip but isn’t too heavy or rough, such as a basketball. Many people find real leather ethically wrong so they choose synthetic leather. Synthetic leather is also a lot cheaper and easier to manufacture.
The second and most important component is the rubber bladder, this is made out of polyisobutylene(C4H8)n, the same material as a standard bike inner tube. Synthetic leather has been around for hundreds of years.
It’s made from Polyvinyl Chloride (PVC). This material was made in 1872 by German chemist Eugen Baumann on accident. Polyvinyl Chloride is made with Chlorine (Cl) and ethylene. When these two are combined ( at extremely high temperatures) they create vinyl chloride monomer. The vinyl chloride monomer can then be polymerized to make polyvinyl chloride. Polyvinyl Chloride is then turned into what we call “synthetic leather”. Chlorine is found in the ocean water, as a part of sodium chloride (NaCl). It’s also found in the earth’s crust. Interestingly, chlorine is poisonous and sometimes fatal, to humans so it is not naturally in the
air.
Synthetic leather goes through a long process to be manufactured. The first thing they do is pump a petroleum based plasticizer into a mixing tube. Next, they add both an ultraviolet light to protect the leather from the sun and a flame retardant solution. Then the mixture blends and they add powdered vinyl. The last step is to unroll a large textured piece of paper and the mixture is coated on top. It hardens in an oven and then becomes synthetic leather.
The volleyball has an interesting history. It was invented in 1895 by William G. Morgan in Massachusetts a few years after he invented the basketball. The volleyball was originally made with the same rubber bladder as a basketball, but it was too heavy. The volleyball needed the ability to be airborne and lighter than a basketball, so obviously a new design was needed. In 1900, William G. Morgan asked the Spalding company to create a volleyball consisting of three layers. There haven’t been many changes in the volleyball since, except for the 2008 Olympics. This was the first major change in roughly 100 years. They changed the design to only eight leather panels instead of 18.
Overall, the way a volleyball is made and the materials it is made out of, have a dramatic effect on volleyball players. Today’s volleyball is much lighter and of higher quality than the original version. There are many, many different brands (such as;Tachikara, Baden, Mikasa, Molten, Wilson, Spalding etc.) and many designs. In conclusion, the game of volleyball is a very fun activity that has been enjoyed for decades. The sport itself is unlikely to change in the future, however science continues to improves the quality of the volleyball itself.
