Unchurched Mary
“Inside the Mind of Unchurched Harry and Mary”, written by Lee Strobel is a very practical book that gives an action plan on how to reach people who avoid God and church. The purpose of the book is to, “help advance readers in their understanding of unchurched people so that personal evangelistic efforts and the efforts of the church might become effective” (Strobel 15). This book shows how Christians can be effective in connecting and evangelizing to non-Christians without feeling the need to shove religion down their throats. The chapters that grabbed my attention were, “Introducing you to unchurched Harry and Mary”, “Understanding your unchurched friends Part I”, and “Meeting Harry where he lives.” During this chapter, Strobel answers a …show more content…
This point convicted me personally. Everything Strobel says in this section astounds me. “After a while, Harry feels like a case study. If this was a real friendship… it would not be dependent on whether we succeed in bringing him to Christ” (Strobel 61). The last thing hurting a lost people want is for someone to treat them like they are their “religious science experiment”, what they really want and desire is a meaningful relationship and someone who will sincerely care about them. One evangelism tool that I found and that is mentioned in the book is small groups. I have found that it is so much easier to bring a friend to a barbeque or bowling activity, than it is to the church. If a non-believer sees the community aspect of the small group, they will eventually have their heart softened towards the church as a whole. Just as Strobel said, “Harry’s attitude softens when he sees the church not as an institution but as a caring community where his relational longings can be fulfilled” (Strobel 63). I believe that the church needs to stop viewing themselves as a “hospital for the broken” and start viewing themselves as a “helping hand to the

A great chasm exists that separates unbelievers from believers1. An example of this chasm is presented in the Gospel of Luke, “And in hell he lifted up his eyes, being in torments, and seeth Abraham afar off and Lazarus in his bosom.”2 The chasm is presented in the “afar off” statement. This chasm, as pointed out by David Wheeler and Richard Leach, is what makes evangelism necessary. Essentially, every Christian is to seek a way to bridge these chasms bringing the unbeliever face-to-face with their Creator3. In order to perform this great task, and the task was as great in the Apostles’ day as today, “Then saith he unto his disciples, The harvest truly is plenteous, but the labourers are few; Pray ye therefore the Lord of the harvest, that he will send forth labourers into his harvest”4 the Christian servant today must rely on the Lord in every aspect and seek out opportunities to present Christ to those around him. Seeing then that there is such great work ahead, and the laborers have been assigned their task, “For he whom God hath sent speaketh the words of God: for God giveth not the Spirit by measure unto him”5, the only success to be found is through sharing the faith by the Word of God through the Spirit…

Chances are if you grew up in the south, then you most likely have been to a church service before. I remember as a kid getting the wakeup call every Sunday morning from my mom, “Get up and get dressed for church!” Even if I did not feel like going, she would drag me out of bed and make me go. Anne Lamott writes about the same thing in her essay “Why I Make Sam Go to Church.” Lamott wrote “Why I Make Sam Go to Church” in 1999 as part of a collection of autobiographical essays in a book called Traveling Mercies. My main reaction to this work was a positive one. I thought the essay was eye opening in a sense and it shows that everyone needs guidance and help from others sometimes.…

Luke’s theme is about new conversion and the rapid spread of Christianity, however, with the addition of the story of Mary and Martha it becomes confusing as to how this story fits in with the overall theme of the Gospel of Luke. However, Luke continues his theme with this story because he wants everyone to know the truth about Jesus. Jesus wanted Martha to stop doing the busywork and focus on the truth of Him and who He is. Before this passage, we have the story about the Good Samaritan who was there to help even when it was frowned upon socially. After this passage, we have where Jesus teaches about prayer. The passage about Mary and Martha go with the Good Samaritan story because Martha was doing what was expected by her culture and society, while Mary was going beyond it and sitting at the feet of Jesus.…

The best method for creating friendship and receiving social assistance: church. Churches establish faith and help for a large number of the working poor. In a research conducted by TIME magazine, 90% of the population that earns less than $25,000 believes in god, while only 78% of the population with as household income over $75,000 and over 50 years of age believes in heaven (TIME 24). Ehrenreich, however, refuses the advice from Caroline, a woman in Minnesota, telling her to "Always find a church" (Ehrenreich 132). Based on her refusal, her future complaints about the lack of help seem to only emphasize her political view when I plainly understand that help is readily available. I believe her refusal to attend church only creates a harder life for herself in the…

In this week’s review, we seek to gain an understanding of what an organic church model looks like. Cole is the author of our text, Church 3.0 and within this book, he points out how church today has not changed much since the early days and that we in our day and culture need to make some much desired changes as to how we do church. Cole tells us that how we are doing church today in the modern society just isn’t working. We have an abundance of mega churches that attract people to them, but, the truth is, they are just one in a big crowd of people. I think Church’s have major responsibilities to communicate the gospel message. We need to remember that it was God’s kindness that saved us. Church’s shouldn’t focus too much flaws and focus more potential. The challenges churches face in today society is how to change with the times so that they can meet human needs without losing a sense of mission and without compromising the central Christian message. Christianity is often misunderstood. Much of the misunderstanding with the local Christian church lies in its inability to be seen as "good" within the local community. The Church by definition is a collection of Christian believers from all over the world and from all times who are bound together by the shed blood of Christ and his resurrected presence. What happens week in and week out in the 4 walls of our churches should be shared with the surrounding community in one way, shape, or form. Churches should feel like a free place that is open to anyone who needs them in any way. It could be simple gestures like offer a public bathroom with a shower during business hours to anyone who needs it. Have church members bring canned foods to service every Sunday and start an open pantry for the local community. It’s these simple things that we take for granted that can have a major positive impact on our local community. Even as we proactively look for ways to reach out to those outside our 4 walls, let’s…

There are many non-believers that are discouraged by its local churches. Many members of a church act one way when inside of the church building and another as soon as they walk out of the door. For a non-believer, this is just confirmation that they do not want any part of a religion that is hypocritical. Also, many leaders of the church live a lavish lifestyle while citizens of its community struggles to provide food for their families. Why would I want to join an organization that takes my money every week so that they can drive nice cars and live in big houses while I can’t even pay my rent? These are common circumstances that we see and as Christians, it’s our job to eliminate this type of view of our faith.…

The Evangelistic ministry design, will take the unchurched back to the beginning of the Bible, from Genesis to Revelations, and allow God to take on the battle of any given concern of lostness, hurt, or the pain of life, at any stage. The unchurched of the community then expects the miracles that only God is capable of, through faith, to heal and address added concerns.33 Bible-based counselors of the evangelist ministry will teach adults who find themselves in a situation where life has become unbearable and in some cases overwhelming, well-studied coping methods. Unfortunately, the Christian who seeks counseling, encounters the how, who, what, and why God is, has been challenged. In relation to Floyd Barackman’s findings the mindset of humankind suffers greatly when decisions and lifestyles are lived without God. Barackman states, “God is reliable and the qualities of His nature are…
