Uncle Rock
What do you do when are so young barely learning about the world but you take in so much as the world passes you by, alone. The story of “Uncle Rock” by Dagoberto Gilb gives us insight into the lives of Erick and his apparent beautiful single mother. Even though Erick’s mother was trying to snag a life of luxury for Erick and herself; Erick is left alone with his thoughts. His mother disregards how Erick might feel because throughout the story he was around different men and different social classes. Throughout the story Erick learns what is important in life and about the one man who can change his life for the better.
Erick’s mother was chasing the luxury of having a husband and having nice things. In the beginning of the story, Erick noted that his mother would only give her number to man that was well dressed. “She almost always gave the man her number if he was wearing a suit. Not a sports coat but a buttoned suit with a starched white shirt and a pinned tie meant something to her.” (Page 1) Erick was forced to behave himself to impress the men his mother was dating. Erick never spoke to the men because he wasn’t interested in them. Although he knew English and his mother told him not to be impolite he chose to stay quiet even to the point he didn’t talk to his mother much.
Since Erick didn’t speak to his mother much he vauled his alone time. While his mother went on dates Erick would sit alone in his house to watch television. At that point it seems like Erick actually enjoys being in solitude. “He was away from all the men. Even though a man had given the TV to them.” (Page 1) The story never mentions if Erick does not mind if his mother goes on dates but the fact Erick’s mother leaves him alone to go on a date speaks volumes about her wanting to get a husband. When Erick was alone with his mother and she would talk about going back he thought of it as a step back as to what they have right
