Slavery has existed in USA since the colonial days. Slavery obviously means to have control over a person with no rights who works for the so called master and if the slave refuses to obey the master they will get punished with violence. Slavery has been a big part of the history but generally most of the actions took place in USA. The text “The Martyr”, Chapter XL is taken from the novel “Uncle Tom’s Cabin” written by Harriet Beccher Stowe, a writer who has experienced slavery. The chapter takes upon the life of one particular black slave who is treated so bad that he is almost beaten to dead.
Two slaves Cassy and Emmeline have escaped from their owner Legree, which have made him very fury. The only person who is aware of this incident is Tom, the main character in this text. Legree’s problem is Tom who doesn’t want to tell where the escapes are because of his loyalty and passive acceptance to the escapes. Legree takes out his frustration over Cassy and Emmeline’s escape on Tom as he beats Tom because he keeps denying to the fact that he doesn’t know anything. As seen in the text “I hate him! And isn’t he Mine? Can’t I do what I like with him? Legree only sees Tom as something he owns and he can do what he wants with him. There are a lot of twist and turns in this chapter.
Harriet Beecher Stow succeeds as a writer to make an impact on the reader with the way she writes. She uses very beautiful figurative language which gives the reader a clear picture of the situation. She uses a lot of complicated words and phrases which makes the story very difficult to understand, especially for the readers with less vocabulary. When Legree talks he uses very old English language like “D’ye hear?”...“Hark‘e, Tom! — ye think, ‘cause l’ve let you off before, I don’t mean what I say; but, this time, i’ve made up my mind, and counted the cost. You’ve always stood it out again’ me: now, I’il conquer ye, or kill ye!--one or t’ other. I’ll count every drop of
