Emotion: The Final Frontier. These are the voyages of the human male. Its hundred year mission: to explore strange new emotions, to seek out new Friendships, and new relationships, to boldly go where no man has gone before.
Men, what are we? To define a man, you need not look further than the room in which he spent the first years of his life in. You pass across the threshold of the expectant child's’ room, your vision floods with hues of the most befitting color for your new baby boy, blue. The crib sits flush in the corner of the room, starry blankets lay neatly against the new bed, inviting the first child into the family. A mobile spins aimlessly above the sheets; the stars and spaceships chiming quietly to themselves. …show more content…
Along the freshly painted shelves include stark yellow trucks with the bold letters T-O-N-K-A indented into the truck beds, the crisp and magical ViewMaster with a new pile of dinosaur slides, an almost impossibly small fireman’s hat with a meek sticker labeled fire chief slapped onto the fore of the thin plastic hat, and of course, the pride of the collection, the Black & Decker 14 piece tool belt set. Why has the boy’s room become so iconic? Does the simple makeup of this child’s chromosomes and DNA decide the course of its future? The time that we live in is dynamic, to say the least. We are being raised in a world of feminism, that implores us to account for the unjust treatment and stereotyping of the female gender. In a world that spotlights the mistreatment of one-half of the population, we males are left to bottle up our issues into the darkness of stage left.
In an era where being confined to a mere two genders is an outdated concept, and simply being a man is considered evil in the wrong context; mentioning that men could even possibly be breathed on wrong is preposterous!
Right? Well, it isn't that simple. Through the systematic and deliberate mistreatment of women, the world has been forced to a state of hypersensitivity towards the plight of the women. As your changing bodies force you to acknowledge the plight of YOU and pretty much only you, you become no better than the oppressors. When considered, why is sexism seldom attributed to men? Because men have all the flashy jobs, the nice cars, and opportunities abound; well this in and of itself is the basis behind our unsung sexism. Behind a mask of opportunity lies the humble boy, scared that he himself won't add up to what everyone expects of him. That he won't meet a girl, get married, have children. Underneath this mask of opportunity lies a sensitive and loving creature - but this isn't ideal, no, a man should be tough, he should be the protector of the family. Not care what anyone says or thinks.... This is the ideal man. This ideal man is found in none other than one of my favorite tv series’ Star Trek, he is the beloved captain of the starship Enterprise, James Tiberius Kirk. While this definition is odd, Captain Kirk was a knowledgeable and compassionate leader who thought of nothing except his crewmates first, showing emotion and empathy that were unprecedented in …show more content…
Starfleet. Of course, Kirk covered his deep caring personality with serial womanizing, and reckless behavior, largely embodying the nature of men.
And so as the men are being nutured and molded into this cookie cutter man, why is it fair for a woman to be numb towards the plight of the man, and expect her own plight to be recognized arbitrarily?
Is this not the definition of sexism? I implore you to break the mold, look past the calculated hurtless shell that men make for themselves, adn understand that men are just like women, they all want to be accepted, and believe it or not, they do feel emotion. So is it too much to ask from our young women to at least acnowlege our plight? I hope
not.
