CONTACTLESS TACHOMETER
ABSTRACT:
The aim of the project is to design a contactless speed sensing device (tachometer) for a motor. Traditional tachometers require a physical contact to the shaft of the motor to measure the speed. In certain applications, where it is not possible to measure the speed directly, it is possible for a contactless tachometer to take the readings from a certain distance. This is the main motivation behind choosing this project.
This contactless tachometer uses the IR transmitting and receiving technique. This is achieved by receiving IR rays from a reflecting spot on the shaft of the motor. The speed of the motor is controlled by PWM from the microcontroller. The project uses a microcontroller and a pair of sensors (Transmitter and receiver) which gives the output to the microcontroller. The timer and the counter of the microcontroller gives the speed of the rotating shaft. The microcontroller is interfaced with an LCD to display the speed. The LCD directly displays the speed of the device in rpm. The controller is selected based on the high processing frequency it needs to meet.
The concept of the contact-less tachometer can be enhanced and implemented in industries like recycling facilities, chemical plants, automotive plants, material handling, food/beverage facilities, paper mills and many others. Also data logging in the memory of the microcontroller is an added facility. Contactless tachometers can also be used to identify whether the motor of the device is going under/over speed, or check for stall conditions.
