Are these Measures a Good Way of Protecting Models and People from Anorexia?
The fashion industry is one of the most sophisticated and profit-making industries all over the world. To enter in such a glamorous environment, a woman has to fulfil some certain conditions that make her easily distinguishable from the others. Requirements consisting of some specific height, facial characteristics and weight are what a girl has to accomplish to become a professional model. With time, the standards have become stricter and more demanding, especially those related to the weight a model should have. The law avoids putting pressure on the models to be extremely thin and it prevents them from developing unhealthy eating habits. As Veran explains in an interview for CNN “[we] want to combat the idea that an agency could urge a model to stop eating. . .Seeing models' bones as they parade down the catwalk is a troubling trend” (McLaughlin and Amiel). Its incentive was later supported by the French health minister Marisol Touraine, who adds that the government will have to examine the wording of the new legislation in further detail (qtd.in McLaughlin and Amiel). After months of discussion, in April 2015, the law passed in the Parliament and was approved as the majority of the MPs considered it as the right measurement that would give a solution to the problems related to fashion industry. The measurement taken will apply only within the borders of France, but taking into consideration the role that Paris has in fashion, the law represents a symbolic “global-impacting” step. Other states that have an important role in the development of fashion would try to analyze the step taken by France, and possibly some would follow its example. In fact, that is what happened.
