Narrative Essay
Laura lies in bed trying to get comfortable. Her husband John is right there next to her complaining that she is flipping around like a fish out of water. She apologizes, saying "I can't seem to get this pain in my back to stop so I can sleep". John turns over looks at the clock, it is four o'clock in the morning, and he has to get up in three hours for work. John starts rubbing her lower back trying to ease the pain. Laura tells him the "spasms" are like waves in the ocean. Sometimes they are little and the next they feel like she is going under never to surface again. She walks into the labor and delivery department. She tells the nurse at the desk that she thinks she is in labor. Maggie greats her with a big smile. "Is this your first?" she inquires. Laura tells her that in fact it is. Maggie leads Laura to the room directly across from the nurse's station. Tells her to change into the gown and get into bed. After hooking her up to all the monitors and equipment, she starts asking questions for the chart. John walks in just as the questions start. Maggie introduces herself and gives her congratulations.
Laura and John begin the waiting game. The waves of pain are coming more frequently. As Laura is in a drug induced haze she remembers back to three years ago when the three doctors that were treating her for endometriosis told her "We are very sorry Laura, but you will never be able to get pregnant and have a baby of your own." "You and John should think about adoption." Laura smiles after one of the waves has stopped and thinks to herself; "Well, I guess they didn't know what they were talking
