Know the work setting’s procedures of receiving, storage and administering medicines.
1. Identify the procedures of the work setting governing the receipt, storage and administration of medicines.
Must follow the EYFS guidance (Early Years Framework For The Early Years Foundation Stage)
All medicines must be kept, stored away correctly as advised on the packet, administered also according to the instructions on the packet and out of reach of children and unqualified staff.
All medications should have the child’s name on so medication doesn’t get used incorrectly.
Staff will not administer medication that is out of date.
Medication must be recorded before staff can administer on a form by the parents. It is available at the nursery when they drop off the child. It will include Childs name, Name of the medication and reason for the medication, Time that medicine is required, Amount of medication required, Parents signature and staff’s administers signatures. It is the parent’s responsibility to ensure that staff are aware of any medication that has been administered before attending the setting and why it has been given so that all staff are aware to prevent overdose of medication.
Only prescribed medication can be administered by staff and written authorisation must be given by the parent/carer on a medicines form, which authorises staff to administer medicines.
All medicines must be logged in and out with their information, name and signature of staff administering the medication and kept in a box in the manager’s office or in a secure box in the fridge also in a area out of the reach of children. Setting Manager must also authorise any medication going in and out.
The staff administering the medication must be NVQ 3 Qualified and witness will hold a relevant childcare qualification.
