I have analysed and calculated the results of my research questionnaire I will now discuss upon the effectiveness of my questionnaire and if in fact I have supported or contradicted my research hypothesis “Teenage girls aged 15-19 years old are unaware of the signs and symptoms and consequences of anorexia nervosa.”
Explanation of findings
In my second question, I asked the participants to define anorexia in the best way that they could. Reflecting on the question, I myself was going by the effective definition given by The Mayo Clinic which states “Anorexia nervosa is an eating disorder that causes people to obsess about their weight and the food they eat. People with anorexia nervosa attempt to maintain a weight that's far below normal for their age and height. To prevent weight gain or to continue losing weight, people with anorexia nervosa may starve themselves or exercise excessively.”
Based on this definition in correspondence with the responses which I received from the participants, I can include that all of the 30 girls could identify the signs of anorexia. This contradicts my hypothesis to an extent as the majority of the girls were able to give a clear in depth answer to the question, however more information on the definition of anorexia I feel is required as the majority of the girls simply used phrases such as, eating less and dramatic weight loss but didn’t go into more depth regarding the definition of anorexia, also the participants did not mention other ways in which to define anorexia such as the aspect of purging and using laxatives as a means to quicken weight loss. However in comparison with the definition given by The World Health Organisation on anorexia which states “Weight loss, or in children a lack of weight gain, leading to a body weight of at least 15% below the normal or expected weight for age and height” I feel the participants managed to define anorexia effectively meaning that within this question
