Othello is another of the great Shakespeare’s classics wrote in Elizabethan English. It is a five acts murder mystery tragedy, set up in the 1600’s that tells the story of Othello, The Moor of Venice. This story has all the classics Greek’s tragedy ingredients to make it an English Literature Classic. The story has a Great man, Othello, who seems to be a well-respected and a good person. Othello is married with Desdemona, without her father’s permission, in the beginning of the History. In this story we could say that the Fortune Wheel it is present in Othello’s life, we can see many ups and downs during the story. Finally we can see the end of Othello, who falls down from his Greatness. In this we can also find other characters, Michael Cassio, a Lieutenant, how has an affair with Bianca, a prostitute. Iago, a jealous man who wants and desires Othello’s perdition. He is the villain of the story and it’s an evil and has a deceptive appearance, capable to cheat everyone being …show more content…
unstoppable until get what he wants. He is married with Emilia, who is the Desdemona’s maidservant. The Act III location is in Cyprus and Othello is the man in charge there. In the both previos Acts, Iago shows his jealousy and hate to Cassio and Othello. He says he should have Cassio’s job, and in the Act II Iago tells us how he plants to get Cassio fired. He then tells us at the end of act II how he plans to destroy Othello. He will tell the lie that Desdemona is having an affair. In the Act III his plan works perfectly. All this hate to Othello from Iago begins with Othello’s marriage, like Iago says, the jealousy it’s “a green eyed monster”, who becomes bigger and bigger until destroys us completely. Another theory would suppose that he is in love with Othello, doing all what he does in an effort to be closer to him. Because we know that the hate and love are feelings very similar, and if you At the beginning Othello seems and is very sure about himself, his wife was always loyal to him and never had problems of any kind, he also was a great and strong fighter. Iago knows that he would never win Othello fighting with weapons, so he uses his words as weapons, having at the end the same result, Othello’s life destruction. Iago, with a well-structured plan and many lies and a little help of his wife he obtains everything he always wanted. Racism is also a very important theme in these story, we know that Othello was a black man, and in that time that could significant a lot. Despite his prestigious because of the charge that he occupied in the society, Othello perceive himself as less confident, because of his skin color. We can refer it as an racial insecurity, who in a big way helped Iago to carry out his evil plan to destroy Othello.
In the Parker Adaptation of Othello (1995) the director made choices to help the viewer to see and understand Othello’s drama. The Protagonist, played by Laurence Fishburne, did a great work showing us, the audience, the mood changes that Othello suffered during the whole film, from the point that he was really self-confidence to the point that hesitated about everything in his life, even the love of Desdemona, his wife, who was extremely in love with him.
I think that the Director chose the correct person to represent this role, he is an authentic black man. He is also big and tall, like it supposed that A general in the Venetian Army would be, he is a great fighter and it is a warrior. He is an actor who can demonstrate through his mannerism all the changes in his mood, e.g. in the fighting scenes when he is fighting in the Castle Inner yard against Iago, we can see clearly the size difference between Othello and Iago, he is bigger and stronger, obviously he defeated Iago, showing us that in that moment he was feeling magnificent, powerful and totally confidence about himself. In the next scene when Iago tells Othello sis suspicious about Cassio, we can see how the actor changed notably his mannerism, he becomes aggressive. This actor has also a great facial expression.
His tone of voice also plays a significant role in this Film, we can see and hear, that his voice tone is not the same during the Film. There are scenes when he is quiet and relaxed, like when he speaks with Desdemona, I would even say that he seems harmless and good. But, like in other scenes, when Iago starts to showing him that he has “obvious” reasons to doubt of Desdemona without material evidence he can see and hear how he doesn’t control his voice tone, denoting his angry and fury against the World, even threaten Iago. Despite that Othello at the very beginning seems really confidence about himself and Desdemona’s love, Iago is able to misled Othello in this Film version. Iago is a very intelligent person, who knows and sees other’s people Flaw. Iago knows that Othello is a vulnerable Person and he decides to take advantage of that situation. Othello is credulous, and after Iago tells him the lies, we can see how Othellos starts to imagine those imaginary scenes in his head. We can see in this film scenes where we see Cassio and Desdemona in slow-motion, to demonstrate us that Othello only could imagine the worst, and like if those scenes were almost real. In another scene we can also see Cassio and Desdemona having sex in a bed, that was an Othello’s nightmare and it is a resource that the Director decided to add, in some way to give more drama to the story, showing us what was happening inside Othello’s mind at that moment, being a very useful technique in scenes like that.
We should not forget to talk about the camera work in this film, and the types of shots. Where the director and his team made a great work, emphasizing in Othello’s changes of mood making some great shots and a distinguished camera work. One of my favorites resources that the director decided to add in this film is in the scene where in a extreme close up shot, we can see Iago talking directly to the OHTELLO’S ear. That scene shows us how Iago poison goes through his words directly to the mind of Othello, contaminating his thoughts and hurting him. We can also see long shots and extreme long shots in the scene of the beach, when we see Othello after his nightmare who went to the beach to think about Iago’s words which were torturing him. Another scene that I really liked was when we see the shot reverse shot when they are talking in the Castle’s Armory. I would like also talk about the Actor’s Othello (1952), the Sir Laurence Olivier’s version.
This version is different because is a Play, who decided to record cinematographic techniques but it still being only a play, who was set in a theatre. I should begin to describe the differences between this film and the Parker’s Othello version. First of all this film is set in a theatre, that means that we can only see the scenography in this play, they are in a theatre, not in a Castle. They do not make scenes in the beach or in the inner Castle yard, they have that limitation. We can also see that the director had to make decision and in this film we see different scenes, e.g. Emilia, finds the Desdemona’s Handkerchief on the floor, not in the bed like in the Parker’s version. After she gave Iago the Handkerchief they do not have sex, like in the other film, where we see that Iago was really excited after the favor his wife did for him, so he decided to have sex with
her. I should also talk about the Othello work in this film. In this Film Othello is a big and tall man, the difference is that he is a non-real black man. His outfit also helps to emphasize his size in relation with Iago; he is taller and bigger than Iago. He wears big clothes and big chains, that give the effect that he is a bit bigger than normally. The director wanted that the difference be notable, so, we can see the fall of a Great Man, Othello, who seemed invincible but Iago, with his intelligence could finally destroy.
In this Film like in the other Film Othello seems to be a vulnerable person and Iago also could see that using his ability. He is very rough in the outside but very weak in the inner side.
I also should talk about the mannerism that Othello has in this Film. He is like in the Parker’s film, quite aggressive and rude, with several mood changes, and that is what the actor wants to highlight in this film. We can see many versions of Othello during the whole film. In some scenes e.g. when he threats Iago and asks him to show real evidence to him, we can see a very aggressive Othello, he seems uncontrollable, he is able to kill him at any time.
The different tones of voices also plays a important factor in this Film, when he gets nervous we can see that he does not control his voice tone, he shouts everybody, showing us that he is really angry. In this film, I personally think that because of the Theatrical techniques , Othello has to speak a bit louder than normally, we should not forget that they are in a Theatre and all the people have to heard him, no matter if they are in the very first queue or in the last queue.
In this film we can also see how all the actors, not only Othello exaggerates their gestures, which are because we are referring to a theater paly. They are playing on the stage and there is an audience in front of them.
Last, we must not forget to talk also about the camera work in this Film, despite the are acting in a theatre, the director of this film used several cinematographic techniques, we can see many mediums and longs shots during the film and different shots angles. They are no jump- cuts in this Film that is a difference between this version and the previously mentioned version. There are no editing, slow-motion, and In my humble opinion is like if they are missing something, because all the editing skills using actually help to add more drama and suspense to the films. There was music, but it was only diagenic music.
