Unit 301
Outcome 1

For this outcome I have been asked to explain why effective communication is important in developing positive relationships with children, young people and adults.

1.1

It is important to have effective communication with children, young people and adults in order for them to feel comfortable and to enable us to have positive relationships with them. Below are the reasons as to why this should be done for children, young people and adults. We should always come across as positive in front of children as this shows children that we can communicate easily. If we come across as negative to the children, they won’t feel comfortable enough to speak to us about anything; therefore we should always try to be positive around them. This will ensure them that we are there to help them if and when they need it. Effective communication brings understanding, which allows there to be better communication. Listening is one of the most important aspects of effective communication. Listening cannot only allow the person to understand what is being said, but also the way the speaker is feeling. If a child has misbehaves and we speak to them in a sad tone, they will understand that their actions have hurt us. On the other hand when speaking to a young adult they are usually able to understand by your body language how you are feeling. But here effective communication is necessary, as young people need to be spoken to in a certain way for them to listen and understand what is being said. Communication is also very important for adults in order for them to understand each other and know what is being said as well as how it is said. As adults, we often misunderstand what is being said between people; therefore we can get the wrong idea, which leads to issues within people.

Effective communication is important in developing positive relationships with children, young people and adults because we need to be able to listen to each other and be able to interpret what others are saying correctly. We need to be able to read their body language signs such as eye contact and the tone of voice they are using, and therefore be able to respond in the right way and show that we understand what they are saying. The giving and receiving of information whilst communicating with each other will be more effective if all people are at a similar level, meaning that nobody has more power over anyone else and there is equal power between those people.
