Tonight we watched an episode of The Rookies named Neon Skies. The episode was about getting a couple of cops in a bad neighborhood to get to know the community and try to deter crime. The chief believes that Terry, a young African American rookie cop, would be great for the task. When rookie Terry passed on the offer, clean cut white Willie stepped up. The first day Willie encounters one of the neighborhood’s crew at the gym and invites them to a game of basketball. He gets beat up when he gets too close. He was also wearing police gear.     As I am reading the book Outcast United by Warren St. James, he talks about many prevalent issues in our society. There is one particular chapter in the book that sticks out to me in my mind whenever I think back to the book. In chapter eight titled “they’re in America now not Africa” we learn of a well to do man named Chime. Chime has come to Clarkston from Nigeria and has made a great living with his insurance company. Not only had Chime done well for himself. He was well known and well liked in the community as well. In this chapter we also meet Timothy Jordan, a troubled cop with a past. He was fired from his old police duties for excessive use of force. Chime is pulled over for no reason and as Jordan approaches his car, he begins to become flustered and starts to accuse Chime of not taking his orders even though Chime has done everything he asked and is being respectful. Jordan uses excessive force and takes Chime down to the ground. We come to find out Jordan only pulled him over because of Chimes skin color. Because Chime is an immigrant, Jordan feels more rage towards him (because of his discrimination) and acts irrationally. As I was looking through CNN.com I came across an article that reminded me of this same situation. Recently a college freshman at University of Southern Alabama was shot dead by a campus police. Another article I came across on the Missouri State website was an article about anger management in men. As I have read both of these articles, they totally reminded me of chapter 8.…

    When it comes to identifying people that have committed a criminal act, the most positive means is through fingerprints. When we are born, our fingerprints stay with us until we die and our bodies start decomposing. To the human eye our fingerprints look the same, however, further investigation will show that each of us have a unique set of friction ridges that comprise our fingerprints and sets our identity apart from each other. At a crime scene, there are two different types of fingerprints that may be found. Patent prints are visible to the human eye. Latent prints are “unintentional prints found on items of evidence or at a crime scene” (Unknown, Obtaining and Recording Physical Evidence, n.d.). The ability to visualize prints depends on the physical condition of the person who left the print, the surface on which they left it, and the reflection of the light which is used to help visualize the print. Other circumstances that effect the visibility of latent prints is time and exposure to elements like heat and cold. However, in any case, prints should be attempted to be obtained. When latent prints are smudged they lack the specific ridges to distinguish the print correctly. These types of prints may not be perfect for fingerprint analysis; they may be utilized to provide other trace evidence.…
