Unit 4 Assignment
1. Under HIPAA, are you legally allowed to view this patient’s medical information? Why or why not? No. According to HIPAA, you are legally not allowed to view the patient’s information. Reasons being, you do not have permission from that patient to view their medical record and you are not their doctor.
2. In this case, how would you be able to correct your error and provide the missing documents and instructions to the patient while still protecting patient confidentiality under HIPAA? You could correct your error by letting the doctor, or someone that has permission to look at that patients medical records, know that the patient forgot the papers. By letting the doctor know he can then call the patient to let them know and they can come pick them up. By doing this you avoid any getting yourself in trouble and respect the patient’s confidentiality.

When discussing information about a patient do not do it where others can hear, such as a hallway. Instead go to a private room, such as the doctor’s personal office, and discuss that patient there in private. This way those that do not need to hear the information don’t, and you maintain
