Unit 4 P5- explain the physical and psychological changes which may be associated with ageing.
In this assignment I will be discussing the physical and psychological changes that are associated with ageing.
The physical changes that are associated with ageing are the change of hormones in your body which will lead to menopause, how the cardiovascular system could incur diseases such as atherosclerosis and coronary heart disease, how the respiratory system could incur diseases such as emphysema and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, how the nervous system can incur diseases such as motor neurone disease, degeneration of the sense organs, degeneration of the nervous tissue and cognitive changes, how the muscular-skeletal system could incur diseases such as rheumatoid arthritis, osteoarthritis, effects of degenerative disease and muscle wasting due to poor absorption of nutrients and how the skin can incur complications such as the loss of elasticity, effects of exposure to ultraviolet rays and the effects of smoking on the body and the effect of illness that are more common in ageing.
As you get older you will start to experience a major decrease in the hormone oestrogen which will follow the menopause. Menopause usually happens gradually, periods will start to become irregular and infrequently before they actually stop completely. Symptoms of menopause can begin up to six years before the final menstrual cycle. Symptoms of menopause include hot flushes and night sweats, heart palpitations, changes to your vagina such as dryness, discomfort, itching and pain during sex, difficulty sleeping, loss of interest in sex, changes in an individuals mood such as feeling tires, irritable, depressed or anxious, having difficulties with concentrating or poor memory and urinary problems such as recurrent urinary tract infections and loss of bladder control. If people have to have their ovaries removed they will get all these symptoms much quicker and stronger than normal.

During the late adulthood many physical changes are brought about by the aging process. The most obvious are those of appearance—hair thinning and turning gray, skin wrinkling and folding, and sometimes a slight loss of height as the thickness of the disks between vertebrae in the spine decreases—but subtler changes also occur in the body’s biological functioning. First, it is necessary to understand what causes people to age in the first place. Over time, changes start to occur within cells that cause them to become less efficient. For example, DNA can eventually become faulty causing it to work improperly. Every strand of DNA has a telomere at the end to help prevent it from deteriorating. Telomeres can eventually shorten, putting DNA and chromosomes at risk for damage. Hormonal changes also occur. Hormones are chemicals produced by endocrine glands that help regulate certain functions of the body. A decrease in hormone activity can contribute to aging. Finally, a protein called beta amyloid is produced in greater quantities in older individuals. This protein causes aging because it interferes with neuron functioning. All of these things combined, as well as wear and tear effects causes deterioration and contributes to the aging process (V. Hill, personal communication, 1/27/2011).…
