In his foreword to Upara, Mane recalls that while writing the book, he had re-lived the tortures he had seen and suffered in the past and that his intention in writing the book was to acquaint society of the sufferings of homeless people and thus motivate them to do something substantial and constructive in the struggle of human liberation. Mane’s message through his autobiography is apparent. It is a plea for liberation from the shackles of the caste system which holds certain communities in bondage and servitude, bringing them nothing but negation, rejection, and denial wherever they turn to.
