A Shift in American Reasoning
The United States of America is a country full of people from various backgrounds and cultures. This nation contains a highly diverse population, the product of numerous waves of immigration from the early 15th Century to present day. (BBC News, 2011) Ethnic and racial diversity, known as the "melting pot", is the core element of the American ideology. Like some countries, the United States started as a collection of colonies when settlers came to the New World. This poem depicted the night her family’s house burned down on July 10, 1666. After the destruction, she wrote the poem expressing her sadness and grief on her loss. She lost everything, including her cherished items where she wrote, “My pleasant things in ashes lie, and them behold no more shall I.” (Bradstreet, 1666) However, she mentioned her understanding this was God’s will for this to happen, and she moved forward knowing her greater reward for service to God was heaven. England eventually won the war, but the costs were really high. As a result, King George III levied taxes against the colonists for England’s services extended during the war. These issues angered the colonists because of unnecessary high taxes, corruption, and “taxation without representation”. Thoughts of freedom from England grew day-to-day, inciting people to protest these acts. A good example of this was a pamphlet made by Thomas Paine called the Common Sense. Paine was a revolutionary, author of several books, and one of the founding fathers of the United States. This pamphlet asked for logical reasoning why colonists should act against England.
