Through a review of blood utilization in the surgical units, the administrative manager of clinical operations for a large hospital noted what she believed to be a significant variation in the number of transfusion orders being placed per surgical case among the surgeons on staff. She brought the question to the surgical quality improvement committee, and the committee initiated a review of current standard practice for ordering transfusions within the surgical units of the hospital and also a review of best practices as supported by current research evidence. They discovered that the evidence from transfusion research revealed that transfusion therapy can result in a variety of adverse patient outcomes, including the transmission of infection diseases and allergic reactions. As a result, the hospital medical staff moved to adopt as its general “best practice” for transfusion ordering: a minimum hemoglobin concentration of 7g/dL (21% hematocrit) as an indication for red cell transfusions and a 10g/dL hemoglobin concentration (30% hematocrit) as a level at which transfusion therapy usually is unnecessary.…

In the story “The Tell Tale Heart” the narrator wants to show the reader that he is not insane. As proof, he offers a story. Every night for one entire week the narrator goes to the old man’s room, ready to do the dirty deed. But, the sleeping man does not open his eye. Further evidence that the unnamed narrator lacks sanity is that after committing the crime of homicide and the police arrive, he is convinced that the now dead old man’s heart is still beating. His guilt takes on the form of a hallucination to the point where he is convinced even the policemen can hear it and suspect him as a murderer. In the end, his guilt drives him to cry out and tell the police to tear up the floorboards to reveal the corpse of the old man he murdered and then dismembered. The story is driven not by his insistence upon his innocence but by insistence on his sanity and to prove that only a sane man…

Once upon a time, a little child named Knil was walking through the forest looking for his sword. As he was searching, he said to himself, "I think I will retrace my steps to find my sword." So Knil set off to his tree house in the Irikok Forest. Once he got there, he said, "Ok, now all I have to do is start from the beginning of the day." Knil started off by getting up from his bed and going to his bathroom to where he washed up. No sword. Next, he went to his friend Airas's house and asked her if she had seen his sword. Still no sword. Knil was starting to get fed up. Then he realized that he had gone to Eluryh to pick up some food earlier in the day. So he set out on the path to Eluryh, checking all the bushes to where his sword could have fallen. But no swords were to be found. Knil made it to Eluryh and asked all the townsfolk if they had seen his sword, but they did not. One man said, "Knil, I do remember you walking out of town with it." Knil replied, "Thank you." Knil realized he was getting closer to finding his sword. He walked down the path back to the Irikok Forest, checking again for his missing sword. When he got back, he searched far and wide for his beloved sword, but he still could not find it, so then Knil went to the Great Uked Tree and asked him, "Oh Uked Tree, can you tell me if you have seen my sword." The Great Uked Tree replied, "Knil, sad to say I have not seen your sword anywhere. You should go home, it is getting late." Sadly, Knil went back to his tree house and got ready to go to bed. He got his pajamas from under his bed. When he pulled them out and, to his amazement, his sword was clinging to it. Knil felt very stupid, he had spent the entire day searching for something that was right under his nose. The moral of the story is that you should keep track of your…

    Urban Legend Essay

According to the Merriam-Webster Dictionary, an urban legend is “an often lurid story or anecdote that is based on hearsay and widely circulated as true.” Urban legends tend to have minimal evidence of where the story originally began making them seem more mysterious and eerie. With this being said a legends background can be assumed to be linked with a multitude of instances. This, of course, what makes it an urban legend. If a urban legend does not contain a some sort of mystery then it would be boring and bland. That is why these types of tales sometimes seem too far fetched or over exaggerated. One story that qualifies as an urban legend is “The Hook,”and this tale is the reason why some couples are afraid of letting their guard down in the middle of nowhere.…
