Urban Legend James Henslin Summary
“Urban Legend” by James M. Henslin is about moral lessons that can be learned from the stories people have passed on throughout the years. James M. Henslin’s essay talks about how there are hidden messages within these stories in which he considers them to be “morality stories” or stories that are intended to teach a lesson. He goes on to talk about how some of the stories share common lessons while each one teaches its own. Some people wouldn’t realize this just by reading the story by itself which is why he goes on to explain the hidden lessons within each “urban legend”.

After reading this passage I realized how valuable it is to analyze and breakdown everything you read in order to get a better understanding of it. But more importantly

In almost every literary work, there is a lesson learned by the narrator of the story through other characters and/or occurring events. Two short stories that have this happen are Lan Samantha Chang’s “Water Names” and Toni Cade Bambara’s “The Lesson.” In both of these stories, adults are teaching the lesson to the children. However, this lesson is taught in an entirely different approach in one story than it is in the other. Waipuo of “Water Names” requires thorough attention from her grandchildren and ignores all questions asked, leaving the children to come up with their own meaning of the story. On the other hand, Miss Moore of “The Lesson” answers all questions asked, and even asks questions to the children. It is clearly evident that Waipuo and Miss Moore have different teaching ethics. This is most likely because the children in both stories are different. However, the lesson taught in each story is the same—just in a different context.…

In the story "A Good Man is Hard to Find" by Flannery O' Conner a hard lesson is learned through the character of a grandmother to a murdered family that pleads to the killer for her life. The grandmother is described by the killer at the end of the story here, "she would have been a good woman if it had been somebody there to shoot her every minute of her life" (338) By this the killer meant that it took a tragic event in order for her to understand herself. Throughout the story the grandmother saw herself as better than other people, and only at the end when facing death did she put herself to a lower level than someone. Another story in which the author uses a shocking or tragic event to impart a lesson or a truth is Nathaniel Hawthorne's "The Birthmark". In this story the main character, Aylmer, learns a great lesson. The result of this event changes his life forever. I think the lesson that Aylmer learned is one that should be learned and read about. I also believe that many people are selfish and egotistical and only realize this when they are directly and adversely affected by such an event.…

When you talk about Ancient Rome, most people think about unstoppable military force, and famous emperors like Julius Caesar, but it was much more than that. Rome was a breeding ground for many ideas and creations that would effect the world for hundreds of years, and even to this day. We stand in awe wondering at how they could've accomplished buildings like the Colosseum, and the Pantheon. These buildings had similar features that were new at the time, but would continued to be used through present day. Thats why Rome's biggest impact on the world was their structural and functional architecture because of their innovation of concrete, use of arches, and creation of domes.…

Folktales are early fairy tales and they are important because it allows them to pass down history and cultural traditions. Fairy tales are important because they give children and adults glimpses into other people’s lives and shows that everyone deals with problems. Fairy tales address problems that people today deal with, “fifty or more fairy-tale books have been published in the United States which re-create traditional tales to address contemporary issues” (10). This is an important fact because it shows that fairy tales are not outdated, the issues they address are still relevant today. This goes to show that the problems we deal with in society are still prevalent; therefore fairy tales are still helpful in teaching problem solving strategies and techniques. Author talks about how fairy tales used to be most importantly used to pass down traditions and teach problem solving skills, but now the value of them is reducing as it becomes more about revenue and appealing to the most people. Fairy tales now are told not to teach a lesson but to entertain an audience. This is somewhat similar to what Bettelheim said because he said that it is important to entertain the audience but it is more important that it develops their conscience. This author is saying that at one point tales were told for this reason but that is no longer the focus.…

    Urban Legend Essay

According to the Merriam-Webster Dictionary, an urban legend is “an often lurid story or anecdote that is based on hearsay and widely circulated as true.” Urban legends tend to have minimal evidence of where the story originally began making them seem more mysterious and eerie. With this being said a legends background can be assumed to be linked with a multitude of instances. This, of course, what makes it an urban legend. If a urban legend does not contain a some sort of mystery then it would be boring and bland. That is why these types of tales sometimes seem too far fetched or over exaggerated. One story that qualifies as an urban legend is “The Hook,”and this tale is the reason why some couples are afraid of letting their guard down in the middle of nowhere.…

Experts have stated that urban legends are an essential part of popular culture because they provide intuitiveness into our fears and aversions. Urban legends exist to give us examples of life lessons, conspiracy theories but mostly because they are fun to tell. An urban legend is often a story told by mouth with different variations to entertain a particular crowd. It is almost always impossible to find the original source of the legend since it is passed around from one to another. There is almost always a moral lesson behind the legend told, even if the legend is false and fictional. Urban legends are rejoicing to prove true or false but not as important as the lesson provided following it.…
