A comparison between the efficacy and safety of different doses of “Gabapentin” as treatment of uremic pruritus in patients on haemodialysis.
Keywords:
Efficacy, safety, “Gabapentin”, uremic pruritus and haemodialysis.
Background:
Pruritus is defined as" localized unpleasant sensation that induces a desire to scratch", it is considered one of the frequent manifestations that occur in many systemic diseases such as biliary obstruction, neurological diseases and endocrine disorders.(1) The origin of itching can be cutaneous, neurogenic, neuropathic, psychogenic or mixed.(2) Uremic pruritus is common in patients with end-stage renal disease receiving haemodialysis.(3) The incidence of uremic pruritus in patients with end-stage renal disease on haemodialysis ranges from 40-50% which is considered relatively high.(3, 4) It is one of the distressing symptoms that badly affects patients’ …show more content…
Beacause of all of the above it is mandatory to make a prospective study to compare the efficacy and safety of different doses of “Gabapentin” to treat uremic pruritus in patients on haemodialysis to know the dose that would achieve maximum efficacy and safety.
Aim of the study
1. Compare between the clinical safety of “Gabapentin” at dose 100 mg three times weekly and “Gabapentin” at dose 300 mg three times weekly for treatment of uremic pruritus in patients with end-stage renal disease on haemodialysis.
2. Compare between the clinical efficacy of “Gabapentin” at dose 100 mg three times weekly and “Gabapentin” at dose 300 mg three times weekly for treatment of uremic pruritus in patients with end-stage renal disease on haemodialysis.
