Us Debt Timothy Amadeo Summary
The argument’s main idea is that the U.S. debt is continuing to increase, and the government needs to halt this growth. The author, Kimberly Amadeo, begins her argument by explaining that the U.S. debt is held by the American public and the governments of other countries. Our debt is the largest in the world, and is continuing to increase. The article also explains how the debt became so massive. Amadeo states that the debt is caused by an accumulation of Federal budget deficits and presidents borrowing from the Social Security Trust Fund. Also, other countries keep lending money to the U.S. and set low interest rates, which benefits the Federal government. Finally, Congress keeps increasing the limit on the debt, thus allowing it to continue to grow. The author supports these reasons by using facts and statistics. The article is wrapped up by explaining that the economy may be thriving now, but soon the growing debt will cause a major crash. …show more content…
Also, the author knows that the economies of other countries have crashed due to debt in the past. The argument is written in an objective point of view, so this leads the reader to believe that there is not a bias. The author presents and explains facts, but does not explicitly share any opinions. The facts presented in the article can all be verified by checking them with other sources. Also, the author mentions several other articles relating to the topic. These articles elaborate on certain points made in the argument. The implication of the article is that the government needs to decrease the national debt before the economy crashes. The author wants readers to be fully informed about the national debt, and possibly encourage the government to make a change to stop

The only thing I realized from my personal experience is that the U.S. government has relaxed the policy regarding to the threshold of international student. The debt limit is steadily rising within the United States causing many challenges for both consumers and business owners. As stated in the text, (Amacher & Pate, 2012) “Economic growth is defined as an increase in real output per capita. An increase in real output per capita means that the average person has more goods and services and a higher standard of living than before.” (chap. 5). Economic growth is hindered when the government increases the debt limit while interest rates remain at an all-time low. In order for the economy to grow we must have a balanced approach. If the U.S. increases the debt limit it forces citizens to pay more in taxes, especially with interest rates low, in order to pay for the debt. This causes a decrease in household income and reduces the amount that people can spend in the economy.…

The U.S. national debt is currently $18 trillion dollars and it is rising fast. The national debt today is the highest compared to the past U.S. national debt. In George Washington’s Farewell Address, it declared to avoid going into debt and if the nation end up in a debt that it should pay off the debt so it doesn’t burden the future generation. Like all the other things in his Farewell Address, the nation didn’t listen to him. The ideal goal right now is to stop the debt from increasing anymore because it is impossible to stop the debt from increasing and paying off all the debt in this generation.…

The role of government in the U.S economy extends far beyond its activities as a regulator of specific industries or gatekeeping. The government is also responsible for managing the overall pace of economic activity, with its objective of maintaining high levels of employment and controlling price stability (inflation). It has two main tools for achieving these goals: fiscal policies, which is done through taxes and spending and monetary policies, through which it manages the supply of money. In this paper, I will discuss the why high deficits of today will reduce growth rate of the economy in the future, look at the history of our nation’s debt and deficits, different elements that causes of deficit and why the cause actually matters, what role the fiscal and monetary policies have to lead to higher or lower budget deficits and how deficits affect the overall long-term economic growth and debt of the U.S.…

The federal budget can be interpreted in a very simple terms. Comparatively, the federal budget is like any person in the United States who has a job earning revenue, and spends his money on things that he needs. The same is true with the federal budget of the United States; it takes in revenue and spends money. The predicament that is going on in our certain situation is that, our spending is much higher than the amount that our government is taking in, causing a very large deficit. The policymakers of America are working to get the budget back to a more reasonable level. In order to balance the budget, the United States needs to be rid of its gargantuan debt.…

When comparing the U.S. to other countries with ‘AAA’ long-term ratings, we observe that the trajectory of the U.S.’s net public debt is diverging from the others. Including the U.S., experts estimate that the five sovereigns (Canada, France, Germany, U.K) will have net general government debt to GDP ratios in 2012 ranging from 34% (Canada) to 80% (the U.K.), with the U.S. debt at 74%. By 2015, they project that their net public debt to GDP ratios will range between 30% (lowest, Canada) and 83% (highest, France), with the U.S. debt at 79%. The second major problem I see is that lack of monitoring what is really the underlying cause that is keeping us in debt. You might think I’m delusional because of course there are many people that watch how the country’s money is spent but I feel like it is not being watched as closely as it should be because of the magnitude of money that is being spent everyday. I think if our country’s spending was being watched correctly we would be able to come up with a plan the country could follow that would get us out of debt and would help us figure out how to manage our money correctly so no other economically crisis would occur. This problem seems to be a problem that slowly has become a huge problem because many years ago when the…

A main contributor to rising US expenditure is the burgeoning federal budget. Since 2001, both Presidents George W. Bush and Barack Obama have accumulated a fiscal budget debt of $11.9 trillion, 67.6% of total US debt. This is due to the sharp increase in military spending during the Afghanistan and Iraq wars ($800 billion a year), Obama’s fiscal stimulus during the global economic crisis of 2008 ($787 billion), further tax cuts ($858 billion) and Obamacare ($265 billion) (Amadeo, 2014). An immediate solution to reduce US current account deficits would therefore be to introduce budgetary cuts, such as the slashing of the Pentagon’s budget by an estimated $487 billion in the next decade (Alexander & Wolf,…
