Using Critical Thinking In Writing
I have used critical thinking to help identify the position of an author while looking for inference within persuasive articles. I learned to ask myself questions about what the author was trying to convey. Critical thinking is an excellent technique for seeing through opaque propaganda manipulative writing.

Chapter 1 of Critical Thinking, Reading, and Writing: A Brief Guide to Argument by Sylvan Barnet, Hugo Bedau, and John O’Hara states that critical thinking has been misunderstood as negative and should be understood as the act of being able to think skillfully, observationally and consciously. This chapter also discusses that a critical thinker should not act upon opinionated and prejudgment beliefs, but should take consideration, and make themselves knowledgeable by finding factual information before making certain claims. Thus making the critical thinker capable of having sound judgment by being able to analyze the situation at hand intelligently and deliberately. In this chapter, I learned that being a critical thinker, reader and writer requires being capable of finding solutions to ideas, questions, and concerns by becoming aware of circumstances.…

Critical thinking involves a persons ability to reason in order to support their belief. To begin the critical thinking process one must acknowledge the problem at hand, find information on the problem; research, examine the problem closely, apply moral principles, decide the best ethical choice and be able to support the claim, then go back over the process on how one came to their conclusion and lastly reflect on their decision. I have learned that the critical thinking skills process is a buiding block, each step builds onto the other to come to a ethical solution at the end. There is no shortcut to the steps and if I do so then I will not get a logical conclusion to my problem. I beleive out of all the steps the one I find myself using…

Throughout my schooling career, I have always utilized critical thinking. Personally, until I can understand and successfully apply a topic, I do not consider myself knowledgeable in it. Perhaps this is a result of my learning style, but I think it has more to do with the value I place on utilizing all of my knowledge to succeed in any task I come across.…

Critical thinking is the intellectually disciplined process of actively and skillfully conceptualizing, applying, analyzing, synthesizing, and/or evaluating information gathered from, or generated by, observation, experience, reflection, reasoning, or communication, as a guide to belief and action. I have learned even when a person thinks critically their ideas can still be rejected, I have learned that getting and keeping the attention of the audience is important, and I have learned to use other people’s critiquing of my ideas as an advantage instead of seeing it as something negative.…

Critical thinking is a mechanism of observing something beyond your first impression and opinion. “Instead of simply responding with what you believe or feel about a subject, critical thinking guides you to think- to examine issues fully and objectively, test your own assumptions for bias, seek additional information, consider alternative interpretations, ask questions, and delay judgment”. Critical thinking is the reason why every professional writer, writes as good as they do. They don’t record their immediate observations; instead they explore the idea and analyze it fully. This process often allows the writer to have another point of view/perspective on the topic in which they are exploring.…

In the discipline of Psychology, there are eight guidelines to critical thinking. This essay will discuss all of them with examples to help understand each one. The first is to Ask Questions: Be willing to wonder (Wade & Travis, 2008 p.8). Young children may ask questions such as, “Why is the sky blue Mommy?” “Why doesn’t the plane fall?” Why don’t pigs have wings?” Unfortunately, as children grow up, they tend to stop asking “why” questions. Why is this the case? Vincent Ruggiero (1988) observed, “The trigger mechanism for creative thinking is the disposition to be curious, to wonder, to inquire.” “Asking ‘Whats wrong here?’ or ‘Why is this the way it is, and how did it come to be that way?’ leads to the identification of problems and challenges.”…

Beliefs, attitudes and values are three little words that have and make a massive impact on who we are as individuals, who we are as people, and even how the world is viewed by ourselves and others. A belief is something that individuals or groups think, such as believing in a god. Where a Value would be the living life in the ways a religion expects, this value will be made from the belief that the person or group has in their God. The attitude towards this would be the feelings, beliefs and behaviour tendencies towards this, for example praying, reading the holy book, towards others that do not believe or have a different set of morals or beliefs etc.…

Critical reading allows writers to discover an author’s purpose, identify his/her tone and persuasive elements, recognize his/her position on an issue, and explore the strengths and weaknesses of an author’s argument, making readers have a deep understanding of the article and the issue. Also, critical reading helps readers construct and evaluate their own argument because it is the first step of critical writing (Goshgarian and Krueger 28). Moreover, critical reading helps develop critical skills as an interpreter of arguments embodied not in words but in visual images (Goshgarian and Krueger 28).…
