Using Supporting Materials in your speech
A house can't be built on cement alone. It has to have bars and hollow blocks, to support it. Even structures back then needed pillars to stand. A family without a mother to support and cherish is not that strong like the ones that are complete.
What are supporting materials?
These are the materials that provide the substance, strength, credibility and appeal a speech must have before listeners put their faith in it.
In the same manner, a speech needs to have supporting materials in order for it to be delivered well. These materials provide the substance, strength, credibility and appeal a speech must have before listeners put their faith in it. You see, speeches without supporting materials are just empty words blowing in the wind. It provides arousal and sustainment of interest, explanation of your ideas, your interpretations credible and verification of controversial or unfamiliar topics.
4 kinds of supporting materials:
• Facts and statistics
• Testimony
• Examples
• Narratives
1. FACTS AND STATISTICS
Facts and statistics are the most objective forms of supporting material and unlike other forms, they can stand alone. You can count on them to add credibility to your ideas. They are specifically important when your topic is unfamiliar or controversial.
Facts are verifiable units of information and according to one study, it is regarded as the highest form of knowledge. Another study says that the provision of references to scientific research in a story increased its credibility.
Be careful when adding words to facts as they may turn into claims. There is nothing wrong with making interpretations. The problem comes in when they add words that alter the content of the fact. When you add words to your statements, it may require further supporting materials so that these statements may be justified.
