INTRODUCTION
Ointments are preparations for external use and is intended for application to the skin. It is a smooth substance that is rubbed on the skin to help heal a wound or to reduce pain or discomfort. Various preparations are made including different bases such as hydrocarbon bases, absorption bases, water soluble bases, emulsifying bases and vegetable oils. The medicaments are dispersed throughout the solution by the bases.
Petroleum jelly, which is one of the major components in producing ointments, is a semi-solid mixture of hydrocarbons (with carbon numbers mainly higher than 25), originally promoted as a topical ointment for its healing properties.
After petroleum jelly became a medicine chest staple, consumers began to use it for myriad ailments and cosmetic purposes, including toenail fungus, male genital rashes (non-STD), nosebleeds, diaper rash, and chest colds. Its folkloric medicinal value as a "cure-all" has since been limited by better scientific understanding of appropriate and inappropriate uses (see uses below). It is recognized by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) as an approved over-the-counter (OTC) skin protectant, and remains widely used in cosmetic skin care.
Petroleum jelly is the most neutral, allergy free base in existence and is a reason why it has been trusted for centuries. The use of petroleum jelly is also a responsible move by society as it reduces some of the problems of dealing with oil and its by-products of which there are many. Petroleum jelly is also one of the cheapest bases to use in ointment production in comparison with some of its new age counterparts and when it comes
