For my paper I decided to take a look at two movies that I highly enjoy watching Starship Troopers and Pride and compare and contrast them with a theory that we have learned this semester. I chose these films not only for their stark differences in plot, but for more importantly the various ways male characters are depicted in these films. I will be analyzing the bulk of male characters in each of these movies through the eyes of the masculine theory. As you know the masculine theory deals with the various ways that male roles are depicting in the film and sometimes can even be used to see how woman are depicted in films if they are depicted in a masculine way. When analyzing a film this way you need to look at how males are represented in…
At the start of the 20th century, the United States were experiencing many changes in the ways that their economics and politics operated. After the Civil War, Restoration, and the Gilded Age, the Progressive Era was a time the United States could establish the principles of the country and begin to build what America is today,. With large monopolies running the nation's economy, such as those run by J.P. Morgan, Carnegie, Rockefeller, and Vanderbilt, many people sought Reformation and wanted to fix the problems of the country. The reformers, or Progressives, wanted to fix the corruption in the government, trusts, poor living and working conditions, and morals in the country. They also fought for conservation of forests, and the rights of blacks, women, and immigrants. The Progressives brought reformation to a national level. The efforts they made lasted nearly twenty years, and came with many successes and limitations.…
At the end of the nineteenth century the United States seemed to be racing forward in many areas, such as technological advancement, more efficient manufacturing, modernizing transportation, and of course, making money. America was, on the surface, improving greatly; underneath however, there were many problems including corrupt businesses and a growing lower class stricken by poverty. In 1900 to 1920 the Progressive Reform Movement swept the nation; progressive reformers rallied for equal treatment and better working conditions; the federal government adopted regulations that attempted to satisfy the wishes of the reformer; both groups had successes and limitations that ultimately led to an overall beneficial effect on the nation.…
The United States during the early decades of the nineteenth century sought to reform the United Staes and expand democratic ideas. There were many major reform movements that looked to expand democratic ideas, which include: establishing free (tax supported) schools, improving the treatment of the mentally ill, controlling or abolishing the sale of alcohol, gaining equal rights for women, and abolishing slavery. The reformers went out to “reform” the time period to greater the democratic ideals of the United States and make it a better place to live for the people, by the people.…
In the years following the Second Great Awakening of the United States, numerous reform factions began to spring up around the country, fueled by recent evangelical ideals. Seeking to improve and expand democratic ideals, many of these factions undertook drastic measures to achieve what they believed to be a proper aspiration. Nevertheless, it would be farfetched to claim that such reform movements within the US resulted in any positive outcomes, and it would be much more logical to claim that many of the so-called reformers were in fact trying to further their own ambitions. By keeping penitentiary, church, and alcohol reforms as a pretense for egotistical purposes, they were able to attract an elite following of people that that acted with…
By the turn of the century, a reform movement had developed within an array of groups and individuals with a common desire to improve life in the industrial age. Their ideas and work became known as Progressivism or the belief that changes in society were badly needed and that government was the proper agency for correcting social and economic ills. Starting up around when Theodore Roosevelt became president and lasting though World War 1, America went through many changes. New reform organizations, laws, and amendments continually shaped this era for better or for worse. During the Progressive Era, many reformers were able to successfully create reform at a national level; however, the benefits of the federal government’s actions were more strongly felt economically and even politically rather than socially.…
Democratic values are the fundamental beliefs that founded the United States and represent the core of America. Throughout history, many reform movements sought to expand these strong values that represent the unity among Americans through “life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness.” The magnification of these principles can be especially seen through the time period of 1825-1850, where much change was beginning to occur. While all of these reforms sought to expand the democratic ideals, only certain movements succeeded and presented the deserved freedom of rights to all. Movements involving religion, juvenile institutions, and women’s rights supported and expanded upon these ideals while other aspects such as temperance and utopianism failed to offer the true meaning.…
The United States from the late 1800’s to the early 1900’s was a place ripe with opportunity for reform and advancement. With a largely diverse, young population, booming industry, and new open minded leaders the United States was practically set for reform. Issues such as Women’s Suffrage, immigration, corruption, and monopolies rose to prominence in this period after years of being swept under the carpet.…
The biggest factor in the changing economic and social economy for the north and the south was slavery. The south had many plantations, which were the main source of income for the southerners. Their main crop was cotton and tobacco. The southerners heavily relied on slave labor to harvest their fields. The north consisted of mostly traders and manufacturers. They believed that slavery was wrong and relied on American workers to work in the factories and businesses. However, this did lead to harsh working conditions and both women and child laborers. This also saw the expansion of the middle class. Trading within the United States was also encouraged. The different regions would trade with each other what they had in excess for what they needed. The south traded a lot with Europe. These are some major factors that attributes to the differentiation between the north and the south.…
Between the period of 1850 and 1900, the nation was faced with a developing industrialized economy. As the factories started to expand, the American workers moved with the change. For many, the old ideals of America began to fade away as well. The American dream to prosperity was to invest in land which meant a safe haven for their family. It is necessary to examine fully what kind of people they were at the beginning of the process and to take account of continuities and traditions as well as new ways of thinking and feeling.…
Throughout the 19th century America experienced booming prosperity in economic growth, new inventions, and diversity. Americans wanted to attain a culture that was unique and did not resemble Europe in any way. Groups dissatisfied with European representations of government and life styles in general, initiated Utopian models organized by leaders whose focus was to bring together groups of people to form a perfect society. “UTOPIA is originally a Greek word for an imaginary place where everyone and everything is perfect.” The objective of these Utopian groups was to develop an organization that would allow for the appeasement of individual improvement by the exchange of stimulating and provocative ideas. While considering these objectives,…
In the seventeenth century, there were two different versions of utopia. When a person hears the word utopia, a different thought will come to each different person’s mind. A utopia can be anything, as long as it brings joy to the specific person. In Colonial America, all people went over to the new world with a fantasy of their perfect place. In fact, two very important historical figures had extreme views on North America. While John Smith viewed The New World as new land where he could make limitless money, John Winthrop viewed it as a City Upon a Hill in which he could bring glory to god. According to Creveour’s observations in 1769, Smith’s vision seemed to prevail.…
In the United States, the 1890s through 1920s time period is known as the Progressive Era. Political reform, along with social activism, was what established this era. In order to move forward as a country, progressives believed we needed to fix or reform our problems. The problems that the nation focused on were major issues, such as safety and environmental issues, child labor, and health issues. Among the most involved were Protestants, who believed that reform would lead our nation to the forefront of the world. The Social Gospel was a new ideology sweeping the land - “which preached helping the poor, improving their lot, [and] gaining them social justice.” (Progressive Era lecture, pg. 1) Protestants used their evangelical backgrounds and liberal educations to help the less fortunate. It was during the Progressive Era that other major historical issues arose; the rights of both women and Mexican-Americans would be evaluated during this time period, but it seems as though the women’s issues overshadowed those of Mexican-Americans.…
No, religion does not belong in a utopian society because religion breeds two things, hope and extremism. A utopian society would eliminate the need for hope because they live in a perfect world. Religion also creates extremism that in turn produces prejudiced people. Therefore, religion is not necessary in my utopian society.…
A utopia is described to be a perfect, blissful, stress free zone. In order for the society to be a utopia, physical activity is a must. Nevertheless, in order for there to be physical activity within a utopian society, play and game need to be implemented. However, sports bring many important aspects to a society that in turn make it better overall. Even if sports have the potential of disrupting the flow of a perfect society, it is an essential aspect based upon the positive components that they present to the public.…
