Uwp 001 Reflection
Coming into the quarter I had a few goals set for myself as a writer that I wished to accomplish in UWP 001. Some of the goals I wished to accomplish for myself were: a better use of rhetorical devices like tone in my writing and strengthening my sense of audience awareness. I feel like I have made huge strides forward in both these areas of emphases. I chose my problem paper to go in my portfolio for a variety of reasons. I felt like my problem paper challenged me more compared to my first paper. I found it especially challenging having to present my problem without sounding like I was complaining every step of the way. This made word choice extremely important and made me appreciate the importance of tone in my papers. I had to be crafty
in how I wanted to present and convey my arguments. There were countless times I had to scrap sentences or ideas throughout my writing process because of this problem. This essay taught me the importance of how vital tone is to the success of my essay. This essay also had a heavy importance on audience awareness. I have always had a grasp on this concept, but for many of the essays I have written; the intended audience has been my instructor. Therefore, coming into this class I lacked experience when it came to writing to a range audiences and being able to properly constructing a paper for them. The problem paper gave me a chance to do that. There were a few times that I lost sight of the audience throughout the paper. Professor Kissinger said I had good moments of audience awareness. This gave me confidence that I was heading in the right direction, but it told me there is still lots of room for improvement. My goal is to have good audience awareness throughout the whole essay not just brief moments. Knowing and understanding your audience is important in writing and if you lose sight of it your writing loses its effectiveness. Even though it would have been easier for me to go with assignment 1 for my portfolio I feel like my problem paper help me grow more out of the two pieces.
My favorite paper of the quarter was our research paper. Initially I felt like it was my best paper upon finishing it. I put a lot of work and time into this paper. I had similar mistakes to my research paper when compared to my problem essay. I had the right components in place, but once again I lacked in my audience awareness and tone in this essay. Before coming into this class I thought one characteristic of good writing was use of long complex sentences. I learned from this essay that that is not always the case. Genre plays a big role in how to construct the paper. I had too many sentences that did not fit this genre of writing. As well as, some word choice that did not fit the criteria of a research paper. Although, I have written similar papers in the past this assignment made me realize how informal in have been in this genre. I had always felt like my previous research papers were some of my best work, but my out of genre style would never have appealed to my attended audience. It was a good learning experience as I am a Biology major and this genre of paper will be common place for me in the future.
This class help teach and show me the importance of rhetoric and audience awareness. The writer must use these in the right harmony if they want to be successful. This class has changed my definition of what I consider good writing. Before I let my grade decide for me if my writing was good. Looking back many of those papers I would consider “good” were riddled with errors. This class helped me strengthen my knowledge about audience awareness and rhetoric devices. Because of that I have a better understanding on how to incorporate these effectively into my writing and to everyday life whether it’s watching a commercial or politics.
