Take a Shot With Me
Vaccinations should be required by law due to the importance that diseases spread at a very high rate and could potentially be deadly depending on age of the inhabitant and the type of disease. Through vaccinations, America could prevent these outbursts by requiring that every citizen get vaccinations to help stop diseases from running wild. The fact that vaccinations help protect children and the children of the future is just one of the many justifications for this law.
When a majority populace is vaccinated it decreases the chance of an outbreak; Outbreaks are most commonly fatal to children and the elderly. Vaccines for diseases such as “rubella, diphtheria,
smallpox, polio, and whooping cough” have stopped the death of thousands of vulnerable people (Vaccines ProCon.org). When a majority of the population is vaccinated, the unvaccinated individuals can rely on herd immunity to lower the chance of contraction. It is considerably less expensive to get a vaccine than it is to pay for medical services once the virus has been contracted. Many cases have shown us that herd immunity “is not only the most efficient method of preventing illness and human suffering, but also the most cost effective” (Ciolly “Mandatory Vaccinations”). A common and well known disease is influenza, otherwise known as the “flu”. This disease normally spreads around the United States between the months of October and May annually. Each year thousands of people in the United States die from flu, and many more are hospitalized. “Flu vaccine is the best protection against flu and its complications” (Influenza Vaccine). Through vaccination, it would strengthen a person’s immune system and not only help prevent the disease, but if the disease is caught it will also stop any further spread. Vaccinations work by creating an immune response within a host or patient so that the activated disease won’t affect them. Some people will say that vaccinations are harmful especially to young people, however “major medical organizations state that vaccines are safe” (“Vaccines” ProCon.org). Vaccines wouldn’t be given out or paid for by health insurances on such a big scale if there was even a chance that they could be deadly when prescribed. The ingredients within the vaccines are safe as long as only the prescribed amount is taken. Vaccinations are a cost effective solution to a potentially deadly problem that will continue to evolve in the future. If we implemented laws now to mandate vaccinations, then there will be less diseases to worry about in the future. As we make advances in technology, it is crucial that our health advances with it. Not only do we have the potential to become one of the healthiest countries but we could also become one of the longest living.
