The choices that we make and the paths that we take will have a great impact on us. No, I’m not talking about the decision to finally listen to your parents and take out the trash. I mean the decision to find a job, a career, a life that you will live, love, and be proud of.
However, finding such a thing won’t be easy. As I’m sure many of you are a little skeptical about some decisions you have already made. You may have declared a major you think you’re interested in at a college you think is right for you. You may have found a job that you could continue for a while. And some of you may have in fact found your place in the world.
But I want you all to know--if you are totally unsure of what it is you’ll be doing after you leave this room today--that is completely okay. Nobody knows where they will end up in life. Life isn’t planned out for us. We will always have the choice to change everything in order to find the right place, the right job, the right life we want to live. It’s never too late. Whether you are my age and graduating today or you’re 60 and a grandparent, the power to change not just your job, but your life, is and will always be within your reach. All you’ve got to do is find it.
Choose to live life the way you want to instead of a life defined by what’s on TV or what other people expect from you. Live the way that makes you truly happy, and reach for your dreams. Ultimately, how you decide to deal with whatever life brings your way is completely up to you.
Thank you

As young adults attending high school and college there are students who know exactly what they want to be in life. Since birth they’ve known they wanted to be a teacher, businessmen or women, lawyers, etc. However amongst those overly prepared students there is another population that quite honestly has no idea as to what their profession will be. Throughout my collegiate career I would have considered myself part of the students that had their ten-year plan figured out, but realistically I wasn’t.…

I look forward to that point in life where I can reflect on my life and be proud of my accomplishments. For years, not having a college degree was the biggest regret I ever had, and now that I will no longer have that, I look forward to what I will do with that. Like with Erikson’s Ego vs Despair, like Kelly, I want to be at that point in my life where I am satisfied with my life. I never felt bad, but there were moments in my work career where I would not be able to advance because I did not have a college degree. Joan Erikson and Gerotransendence, Kelly have hit that point where he is content with where his life is at and the close circle of friends that he has is what helps keep him grounded.…

The article Finding Your Heart’s True Calling by Gary Selby tugged at my heartstrings a bit as it reiterated questions that I have asked myself over and over again. The piece assured me that I’m not the only person who is worried that my major may not support me, and solidified my belief that my occupation should be enjoyable to do and fulfil the need to do meaningful work. I have always known that I do not want to live my life wishing that I was doing something else. What was most surprising to me in the article was when the author described himself reflecting on his own journey by stating, “And yet when I look back, amazingly, I really can see the outline of a coherent plan” (7). I never had thought about that before.…

Understanding that college is a time of both personal and educational growth, I positively anticipate many things. As an undergrad, I will join organizations and activities while participating actively in them. For academic and language enrichment, I aspire to travel to a Latin American country to study abroad. Also, I aim to be successful in my studies while balancing them with a part-time job. As a result of my hardwork and progression, I desire to obtain an internship as I network with area professionals. Besides focusing on my education, I look forward to finding my purpose. That being said, I am a firm believer that everyone is on this Earth to serve a purpose. As I nurture my skillset and zero in on my interests I look forward to discovering what position within business I am here to serve in. Ultimately, I am excited utilize the next four years of my life to have experiences that I will look back on in 30 years and be proud of having…

The article “Are You Deciding On Purpose” about the interview of author, speaker, and counselor Richard Leider really made me think about my life and what I want to do with myself. Leider brings up many great points in the interview and it was an eye opener for me after I finished reading the article. The first thing he mentions in the interview is how people are intimidated by all the choices we have now as career options. Nowadays, there are so many career paths to choose from that it overwhelms people and the decisions that they make. I think this is true for everyone and especially me. I thought about this for a while and I too do not have any idea what I want to do in my life. I have changed my mind many times about what I wanted to do as a career and I always thought about the money. After I finished reading the article, I realized that picking a career path is not all about the money. It’s about whether you enjoy what you are doing because you spend 60% of your entire life working. If I spent 60% of my entire life just working to pay the bills, I would be miserable by the time I’m retired because there wasn’t any satisfaction or fulfillment for me. I still don’t have any clue on what I want to do with my life but reading this article really changed my mind on a lot of things.…

For some it takes till they’re forty years old to find their bliss and for others it comes naturally. For me, I think I was placed in the middle. I wasn’t exactly sure where I was going, but I knew I wanted to get somewhere. Not so exactly as “confused” and “lost”. More of just standing in front of a two-way street and not sure which way to turn and which would be the best direction for me. Taking Life Career Planning as a course was one giant leap that helped me discover myself and what I want to pursue. Throughout this semester I discovered myself in a deep personal level I didn’t even know existed in me. My meaning in life, my self-esteem, and what I value most in life. In the end I think I’ve accomplished a lot through this course.…

“Two roads diverged in a wood, and I took the one less traveled by, and that has made all the difference.” In life, we are faced with many situations that cause us to have to make decisions. The easiest thing to do isn’t always the right; the right thing isn’t necessarily the easiest. Sometimes we have to make the right choices on our own without any influence. Going to college was the best decision I ever made. Of course I could have taken the easy way out and not attend college, but if I had taken that option, I know that I would not be able to have the lifestyle that I want. I chose to go college so I can have a career, make my family proud, and be a great role model for my children.…

The decisions and choices we make affects our daily lives as it lets us explore wonderful opportunities and life experiences. Thus, there will come a time when all of us have to decide on what we want to be successful in, and what our potential career should be. There will come a time that as we walk down to receive our bachelor's or master's degree, we ask ourselves, "What does the future holds for me?" Everything that we do, everything that we build and write, helps us discover and research new opportunities and a possible path to a career.…

Remember when you were ten years old and your parents asked, “what do you want to be when you grow up?” You’d smile, and without batting an eye, answered doctor, fireman, teacher and so on.
