When a fetus gains moral status, or when the fetus becomes a person, is an unclear point that…
What is life for human beings ? Is a life of mere existence worth living? Is that what we want? Or do we want to be just like McCandless and actually live life to the fullest by taking chances to discover our deeper selves. I'm not saying we should all go do something that we want to and go die. What I'm saying is that life is…
Everyone has their own way on how they value life whether it’s cherishing friends, traveling around the world, or learning as much as you can before the day it all ends. Some people take minutes figuring out how they value this human life and some people take hours. There are so many voices that are very confident in their opinions such as Roger Ebert, Hamlet, Steve Jobs etc. Chris Jones interviews Roger Ebert after Ebert had surgery to remove his cancerous tissue near his right jaw. In the article “The Essential Man”, Roger Ebert shows how he values life and what he does everyday to expand his movie critiques.…
Value is based on the amount of money that people will make in their lives. In the article, “What is a Life Worth?” by Amanda Ripley, after the catastrophic accident, the government attempts to compensate by giving money to victims’ families; however, the system it distributes money is unacceptable. When Ripley reveals, “That means a broker’s family will qualify for a vastly higher award than a window washer’s family” (Ripley 8). An individual’s life worth less than others when he or she had a low paying job. The lives of all people should be valued at the same price regardless of their jobs. However, the government views profession is a critical matter when it comes to identifies how much his or her life value is not only after the death but also when he or she is still alive. Furthermore, the author of the article “What Is the Value of a Human Life?”, Kenneth Feinberg, who also agrees with Ripley’s perspective. According to Feinberg, “Mr. Feinberg, my husband was a fireman and died a hero at the World Trade Center. Why are you giving me less money than the banker who represented Enron?” (Feinberg 3). Although they are in the same accident, the amount of money that they received is totally different. People began to raise the question why some family gets more than others. As a consequence of the government response, people believe their life worth nothing when they have low- paid jobs. One might object here that compare the value of life in jobs how much they are worth is fair. If people want to get treated equally, then they should work hard to earn respect from others. People should value life, not by how much money they make, but by how much they enjoy their…
The foetus has the moral status of a piece of tissue right up until birth.…
There are about 7 billion humans living on the Earth. Each of these 7 billion people has a life of their own to live. They might be working a job, or taking care of kids or living on their own. Every person has a different life and different values. Do these people value the life that they are living? Another question might be, how should their society assign value to human life? Society should assign value to human life based on friends and family, one’s circumstances, and qualities of life itself.…
“This, I believe” Speech “The purpose of life is to live it, to taste experience to the utmost, to reach out eagerly and without fear for newer and richer experience.” -Eleanor Roosevelt. What Roosevelt is saying in this quote is that in order to live we need to experience, not just simply exist and especially not exist in fear. I believe that everyone should learn to live in the moment and not overthink but learn to value the ability to push limits.…
If you were on a boat and you had to take one person with you who would you take? The rich person might be saved because they have money. The poor guy would be at a disadvantage because he has nothing to give you if you save him. If the poor guy had to pay for a surgery and he could not pay for it right then and there, but the rich guy could the rich guy would get the surgery before the poor guy. In the article “What is The Value Of A Human Life?” By: Kenneth Feinberg is say “The law required that I give more money to the stockbroker, the bond trader and the banker than to the waiter, the policeman, the fireman and the soldier at the Pentagon.” The law wanted the people who made a lot of money to get a higher compensation then the policeman and firefighters who rush in there to saves the life of other people. This is wrong because the policemen and firemen put there self in danger when they go on a call, they did not have to be a firemen or police officer. The people who was the stockbroker did not put there self in danger so the firemen and policemen should get paid more than the other people that did nothing but…
The simple answer is simply this: the meaning of life is whatever we choose it to be. One person may choose to provide food and shelter for oneself, for a family or for total strangers. Another person may choose to provide inspiration and guidance to others, or to accumulate wealth, and yet another person may choose, on a moment to moment basis, that which brings peace and happiness to oneself. This decision in what makes your life meaningful is something each one of us makes for ourselves and it is always open to change. It becomes the basis for many other decisions that we make on a day to day basis. If we decide the…
What is a life worth? In today’s society the people take an unbias approach towards the, issues regarding the value of a person’s life. There’s compelling articles and evidence provided by , Amanda Ripley, and The Human Life Value Calculators, that conclude logic, and emotion to impact how the value of a person is determined.…
Genetics inform us that every cell that contains DNA has potential to develop into a complete person, so does a dead dandruff flake given the proper environment. So we can 't use “living” as a characteristic of a person. A fetus is alive because cells have multiply, divide and grow. It is human because it has human DNA and left to grow it can become a full human person. However, it is not a person yet because it does not possess consciousness, and this does not occur until months sometimes even years after a baby is born. Therefore having a set of human DNA does not give the fetus human rights. Pro-life supporters argue that when you stimulate a fetus in a uterus using a needle they react. But this is only reflex and not a conscious reaction. A fetus brain hasn 't been develop completely therefore it cannot function enough to be conscious.…

The value of human life is still a mystery and we as a society is still trying to figure it out. During early times, life was not valued at all. People were being turned into slaves and treated like nothing. In today’s world though, we base the value of life by our achievements, one’s past, or the salary one receives. This shouldn’t be the way we value one’s life. We as a society cannot assign a value on one’s life. Money cannot buy happiness. In the article “What Is a Life Worth” by Amanda Ripley, she argues that nowadays we base life on money. “The courts started to put a dollar value on a life-after death” (“What Life is Worth”, stanza 1). I do not agree with this because people expect money after a death occurs to a loved one. No amount of money can fill in the void of a loss someone is enduring. William Shakespeare, one of the most famous and influential writer, argues his point of view of human life in “Hamlet’s Soliloquy.” Shakespeare uses a suicidal character, Hamlet, to show that the only time we value life is when something bad is happening. Also to show that life is full of misfortunes. Both Shakespeare and Ripley seem to be suggesting that life is only valued by death. Death opens our eyes and makes us cherish what we have. This sounds very sad, but it’s very true. The government doesn’t seem to care about human life. Cheri Sparacio, the widow of Thomas Sparacio, exclaims, “The government is not taking any responsibility for what it’s done. This was just one screw up after another.” The government tries to replace loss with money. How can one’s life value be bought? Nowadays, one way life is valued is by money.6 On the other hand, Lance Armstrong believes that death is not an option. That the value of life should be cherished and taken for granted because your life can end any second. In the excerpt “It’s Not About the Bike: My Journey Back to Life” by Lance Armstrong with Sally Jenkins, it talks about…
There are many arguments supporters of abortion present to argue that a fetus is not a person and therefore its termination is not morally wrong but morally permissible. Some say that personhood(which they define with various criteria, can hold rights and begins when the fetus is conscious and aware of its surroundings (Robinson 2012).…
