Value stream mapping tools
The article speaks about the seven value stream mapping tools. I would start by saying Value Stream Mapping is a tool that can be used in minimising waste in manufacturing. Wastes in manufacturing have been grouped into seven and they are overproduction, waiting, transport, inappropriate processing, unnecessary inventory, unnecessary motion and defects. It is common practice to reword these wastes so they become relevant to the type of industry seeking to define and eliminate waste. In the implementation of lean, value stream mapping is suited to start the process; it very quickly yields benefits such as improved quality, reduction in lead times, reduced inventory and better use of resources. Through the identification, separation of Value adding and non-value adding activities, users are empowered to make the necessary improvements needed to create value in the eyes of the customer

Process Activity Mapping
This tool originates from industrial engineering, it studies the flow of processes, identifies wastes, and considers if the processes involved can be arranged in more efficient /simple sequence. It also considers using a better flow pattern or route and ensures that all activities involved is absolutely necessary.

Supply Chain Response Matrix
This tool originates from time compression logistics. It shows critical lead-time constraints for a process. Its Horizontal axis shows lead time for product internally and the vertical axis shows average amount of standing inventory at specific points in the supply chain thus targeting both inventory and lead time improvements. It also shows the cumulative lead time in a distribution company. It could be used in the textile, electronics, food, clothing and automotive industries.

Production Variety Funnel
This tool originates from Operations Management; it illustrates how company/supply chain operates and how the complexities can be managed. It gives an overview of a

Value flow is the, “Sequence of activities required to design, produce, and provide a specific good or service, and along which information, materials, and worth flows” (“Value Stream,” 2014). To be successful, it is vital for companies to conduct an efficient value flow throughout all operational processes. Researchers have rigorously studied and assessed the variables and effects of value flow throughout numerous industries and have developed processes such as lean SixSigma and value stream mapping. This has become increasingly important because of modern technological advances and increased competition. In today’s business environment, having a top-notch…

Inventory is the stock of items used to support production, supporting activities and customer service. It is the “bread and butter” that keeps manufacturing firms in business, and is a critical resource in the supply chain. Inventory can be manually managed so that different business conditions can have less of a negative impact on the operations, and give support to the efficient running of supply chains. There are also many tools that companies use to manage production, such as the master scheduling, the material requirements planning (MRP), job sequencing, and distribution requirements planning (DRP). Now with all that said, let us now begin the review and analyze the first case study about the Realco Breadmaster Company.…

Value stream mapping is a Lean process-mapping method for understanding the sequence of activities used to produce a product. During the Green Suppliers Network technical review, you will use value stream mapping to identify sources of non-value added time or materials; identify opportunities to increase efficiency; and develop a plan for implementing improvements. Value stream maps serve as a critical tool during the review process and can reveal substantial opportunities to reduce costs, improve production flow, save time, reduce inventory, and improve environmental performance. Conventional value stream mapping can overlook environmental wastes, such as: • • • Energy, water, or raw materials used in excess of what is needed to meet consumer needs Pollutants and material wastes released into the environment, such as air emissions, wastewater discharges, hazardous wastes, and solid wastes (trash or discarded scrap) Hazardous substances that adversely affect human health or the environment during their use in production or presence in products.…
