It can be used to determine which social demographic to direct marketing efforts towards, or what type of advertising is most likely to attract the most customers. It can also be used to determine weaknesses with marketing, distribution and production. Applied research can help determine the effectiveness of current business practices, and can help in developing more efficient ways to accomplish tasks. Applied research could take the form of public surveys. Interviewers could interview random people on specific questions related to the research topic. In advertising, a research team could present a particular method of advertisement to a group of random people, and then assess the effectiveness of the marketing technique. Research could also be done via the internet. When used to create more efficient business practices, an area of inefficient productivity can be turned around by researching the current method, and then determining ways to make it more efficient. This method is used by Lean Six Sigma graduates at my current job. In all cases mentioned above, the information gathered could be presented in a PowerPoint presentation or other written reports to show the findings of the research.
