Values
Our values define who we are. They are the fundamental beliefs that guide our actions and behavior. They influence the way we interact with others and our thought process. Every day, each one of us makes choices and decisions that directly affect the way we experience each other and the way others experience us. Values, in essence are what motivates us. The values that define me are: caring, compassion, helping others, team work, education, dedication, and results oriented. We all act and make decisions without realizing that these processes are in fact based on our core values. Values are as Burkhardt & Nathaniel (2014) state, are concepts that reflect what is meaningful and important to us. During my participation in this BSN program, I have had the opportunity to learn about what my values are through values clarification; in turn I have become very aware of my thoughts, feelings and what motivates me. I feel that the knowledge I have gained throughout this education has made me a better and more confident nurse because I am more aware of myself and have gained confidence in my decision making. As a nurse, I am drawn toward helping others and it’s not just my patients, it can be anyone in need. I have been known to pull over on the side of the road and offer assistance, if I see someone having a difficult time lifting their groceries, someone that has fallen or broken down on the side of the road. For me making someone else’s day a little is easier or even a little happier is one of the greatest feelings in the world. As I work with patients, I become 100% vested in them and their outcomes; I of course want the best for them. Finding a way to motivate patients is an important concept when wanting to bring about change, with the knowledge I have gained I have learned to motivate my patients by asking them what they

    | Nurses show concern everyday by listening to patient’s needs and worries. Nurses are at the forefront for the patient’s interpersonal needs and are advocates for them in many ways. They keep them informed of their plan of care and ensure their personal safety. Altruism is also demonstrated when working with our colleagues and other health care professionals. Nurses will be cooperative with changing of shifts, schedule changes, and provide teamwork by offering help to colleagues when they are needed (Johnson, Haigh, & Yayes-Bolton, 2007). Altruism is also exhibited by the nurse when he or she puts their patients first by having to sometimes work…

My patients are human beings. They are people with feelings and souls, and they are to be treated with just as much respect as everyone does. It does not matter if they are on their deathbed or just coming in because they have a cough. Being a positive role model is an important philosophy. I was raised watching my mother be a nurse and always enjoyed going to work with her and helping with small things such as passing out ice to the residents of the nursing home. It brought so much joy to their hearts that a child would take time out of his or her day to come and spend it with them. Patient advocacy is also very important to me. I care for a diverse group, anywhere from ambulatory patients to comfort care and hospice patients. Nurses are also providers of most of a patient’s education. Even though a doctor gives a patient details about their treatment plan, alternative treatments, the…

I always lived in underserved areas throughout my life. My father and grandfather both were physicians and they became physicians to take care of their community. The community they lived in had no access to medications or medical services. Their life was so miserable that it was very difficult to survive especially if one was poor. I have seen my grandfather and father working very hard to make their community free from any sufferings. My experience of observing the human suffering around me and the inherent talent of connecting myself with human suffering led me to my dream of being a ‘caretaker’/nurse. That was just a beginning.…

Values provide direction on your actions personally and professionally. Typical values are honesty, compassion, respect, responsibility, etc. They can be derived from your religious background, childhood or life’s lessons most people get their values from a higher power or a religious source. For example, Christians get their value system from the Bible and the Ten Commandments. They believe to treat everyone like you would want to be treated. You’re your brother as God and Jesus would love you. This cannot always be a positive thing. In a certain Muslim culture, they believe in dying for Allah, which is their higher power. Therefore, they may believe it is ethically correct to strap a bomb and kill several people.…

Catholism has had a great impact on Filipino customs, behaviors, and traditions. It is common for Filipinos ( specifically those in smaller, provincial towns ) to attend church every morning and to pray the rosary each night. In fact, Filipino homes contain various statues of Jesus Christ, Virgin Mary, and other saints. Finally, Filipino festivals and community events may have a highly catholic meaning, often honoring Jesus, Mary, or other saints.…
