In this essay I am going to tell you about three very important ways in which DBC Pierre portrays the theme of sacrifice in the novel Vernon God Little. These three points are: religious references, the mentality in the town Martirio and what role the mother Doris plays in this theme of sacrifice.
Religious references
The town in which Vernon lives and in which the school shooting happens is called Martirio. The name Martirio MEANS refers to martyrdom, which means ‘the condition, sufferings, or death of a martyr’. A martyr is ‘one who chooses to suffer death rather than renounce religious principles’ or ‘ one who makes great sacrifices or suffers much in order to further a belief, cause, or principle. In this novel DBC pierre …show more content…
This very correctly symbolizes how the town of Martirio is and how the people living in it are. The ‘death of a martyr’ then refers back to Vernon because they want him to suffer for the crime that his friend Jesus did. They want him to suffer for their loss because he was the best friend of Jesus. The thing that works against Vernon is the fact that he was not in class at the moment of the shooting. He was running an errand for his physics teacher Mr. Nuckles. Vernon has a bowel problem (a long held family secret) but on his way for Mr. Nuckles he had an accident. He took a ‘shit’ behind the gym. Now if he would just tell this in court to the jury, it would prove his innocence. But his pride and toughness is on the line here. So he refuses to tell this to the jury. Now of course Mr. Nuckles knows that he was running an errand for him, but when he shows up in court, he is so hypnotized by the shooting and in such a shock that he is unable to say anything about the shooting. All he manages to get out of his mouth is a squeal while fiercely pointing to Vernon. This causes the town people to think that Vernon is guilty, while in the law a person is innocent until proven guilty. Throughout the whole book this is turned around to: ‘a person is guilty until it is clearly proven that this person is …show more content…
Vernon and Doris live together on the northern edge of Martirio (in Martirio, as you get closer to the outskirts the people and housing gets poorer). The husband is not present in the story, but we do get knowledge of him having existed in the past. As at the end of the novel Doris says ‘you father would have been proud of you’ and in the novel Vernon is vaguely able to remember him.
We don’t know if it is related to each other but it seems as if Doris is lonely. Then when Lally appears, promising to help Vernon and bring out his side of the story that as he says ‘will make him innocent’, she immediately clings on to him and starts loving him. He promises her that she will become a big star on TV and that she will even get her own show. In this way he wins her trust and she even gives him money that he needed to be able to pay of his debts. (Lally is not even a real CNN reporter but a repair guy from Ledesma.) The money that Doris uses to pay of Lallys debts was the lawnmower fund which Vernon needed/wanted to make his escape to Mexico. But this obviously fails because he has got no money to pay for the ticket. What she is basically doing is sacrificing and dropping Vernon for her own fame. And the only thing that she cares about throughout the book is her “fridge” which she is waiting for (off course she has never ordered the fridge but she just wants to show off to her friends.) She is so obsessed by her
