(The Soloist)
This film was watched on October 4th, 2013. It is directed by Joe Wright, and the main characters are Steve Lopez (a Journalist for the LA Times) who is portrayed by Robert Downey Jr. and Nathaniel Anthony Ayres Jr. (a mentally ill homeless musician) portrayed by Jamie Foxx. This film follows Steve Lopez a journalist working for the LA times and while looking for a good story to write stubbles upon a street musician who is playing a violin with only two strings. The journalist goes on a great journey with the musician as I will explain more in detail as the review goes on. In this review I will explain the great story this movie told. As well as what music period it represented; what I learned from this film, and why I believe this movie was made. In 2005, Steve Lopez had a pressing need to get some story ideas for the newspaper article. That’s when he stumbled upon a homeless street musician playing a violin named Nathaniel Ayers, who is very quick to avoid a handshake. Mr. Lopez began to converse with Nathaniel and soon discovered that Nathaniel had attended Julliard but had dropped out after two years of attending. After that day Steve couldn’t find Nathaniel anywhere until he saw him under a bridge playing the violin once again. He listens to him play the violin and tries to talk to him about the article he wants to write but Nathaniel just wants to play music. Once he stopped playing the violin he talked to Steve and told him that he usually plays the Cello but the violin was all he had at the moment so he learned to play it. After their second encounter Steve Lopez was getting everything ready to publish this story so he had contacted Nathaniel’s sister who isn’t a main character in this film but her insight about Nathaniel helps as the film progresses. When the story is published an older lady read the article about the homeless street musician playing with only two strings and was moved. She sent
