It has been said that one must recognize their history in order to understand the present and prepare for the future. Although our course is entitled “Vietnam & 20th Century Experience”, our course actually begins in the 19th century. This is because it is both necessary and helpful to study the context of prior history in order to understand that culture and the mindset that the people of that culture were in when decisions were made and actions were taken that led to significant events in their history.…

Vietnam is a country that extends about 1000 miles from Southern China and Southwards to the Gulf of Thailand. The country’s official language is Vietnamese, and its capital city is known as Hanoi. Vietnamese are newcomers to North American who still hold their culture, and they have traced their civilization back even further to a religion known as Phung-Nguyen that existed before 2000 B.C. This paper contains a discussion and also research about the Vietnam War or the so-called Vietnamese “boat people.”…

Through the first hand accounts described in the letters of soldiers who fought in the Vietnam War, it is quite prevalent that the conditions and average days in Vietnam were far from a pleasant experience. Although they “attempt to make due with what they have”, as an anonymous soldier states in his letter home, it is quite difficult to enjoy their stay. The largest problem among the soldiers is they had no notion as to what exactly it was they were fighting for, yet continued to fight; many didn’t even believe they had a chance at leaving Vietnam with victory in their hands. One young soldier, who remains anonymous, wrote to his brother of his inability to comprehend the war he was fighting and further extended this comment to not understanding war as a whole. The focus of the Vietnam War differed greatly from that of other wars in American history; The goal was no longer to conquer territory, but kill the enemy in cold blood. This scarred not only the soldiers, but also the nurses tending to the wounded soldiers. Although textbooks may display a more valiant outlook of what the war was like, nothing can better…

Those of us in the United States have the luxury of visiting our relatives across the world. We get all caught up in our pleasures of vacationing, that we fail to see things from the perspectives of others. For relatives wanting to travel to different countries, saving enough money is no easy task. In the wake of the Vietnam war, economic hardship runs rampant in communities with run-down neighborhoods and disheveled street beggars. My Vietnamese cousin, Thai Minh, doesn't let these difficulties deter him from traveling. Minh travels not only to search for job offers, but also to escape the sensation of feeling trapped inside his war-torn nation. Minh uses traveling to attain a worldview not limited to a single part of the world. In time, he…

Prior to my research, I did not know much about the Vietnamese people or their culture. I learned about the Viet Nam War, and about how many innocent people were persecuted. I was familiar with the stereotype that all Asian children excel in school and are great musicians. I have experienced that many of the local nail salons here in Florida are owned and operated by Vietnamese people. I have also heard that Vietnamese gangs are of the most violent. I have not been in contact with many Vietnamese people in my life, but I am looking forward to learning more about them.…

How are you? I hope you and your family are well. I’m doing a VietNamese language course. I meet some advantages and disadvantages when coming to live and study here. The first disadvantage, I got difficulties when communicating with many people because everyone speaks VietNamese. Then, I reach(reached) (tense) impasse about looking for accommodation because HCM city is very crowded. I still miss the Japanese food although VietNamese foods are delicious and cheap. I still do not adapt to them (??? I don’t understand what you mean). Here, Pho is the most popular food among the population. I recongnize Pho is mostly commonly eaten for breakfast. I also like it, (I like it, too)especially Pho Ga (Pho with chicken). However, there are some advantages. I meet(met) some Janpanese classmates. In addition, professors are very zealous. I can ask them questions at anytime. Beside, VietNamese classmates are friendly and they help me so much. Viet Nam has many special things so I wish you will visit VN on near day. See you soon…
