HPU Go Abroad Initiative
For my Follow on Service Project I am creating a study abroad mentorship program called the HPU Go Abroad Initiative that focuses on incoming and current low income and minority/ underrepresented students at Hawaii Pacific University. Hawaii Pacific University mission is to celebrate and promote diversity as it considered one of the culturally diverse universities in the nation and the world. To take it to another level, supporting and uplifting underrepresented students especially Native Hawaiian/American, Black, and Hispanic students and students from low income families will help encourage them to study abroad. Statistics show 22 percent of the student body are Pell Grant recipients but many do not know that this makes them eligible to compete for the Gilman Scholarship. The program will include past study abroad students that have similar backgrounds as the focus group as mentors and past Gilman Scholarship winners from …show more content…
I will serve as a mentor and share my study abroad experience by conducting a blog during my experience and hosting panels to share information about the challenges and rewards of studying abroad. The HPU Go Abroad Initiative will have a social media component to keep in touch with mentees and share information about upcoming events. The event focus will include writing and application workshops, resume building and development tips, outings between mentors and mentees, cultural events in the Downtown Honolulu area, HPU sponsored events and panel discussions. This program will increase student involvement on campus, cultural awareness, promote study abroad, and provide opportunities for professional and academic development. Panels will include discussions and presentations about finances abroad, budgeting, how to overcome social challenges, becoming comfortable abroad and learning about the study abroad programs we offer at

Embedded in one of the most innovative cities in America, Boston University provides an environment that not only permits minds to think of ways to change the world, but also offers opportunities for students to accomplish these things. Boston University has created a place that allows me to pursue dreams and build on ideas to make thought into reality. I have some international experience that helps me appreciate the importance of global presence. Two years ago, I started my Girl Scout Gold Award project to gather and distribute dental supplies to needy children in Ghana, West Africa. (My parents had planned to travel there as part of a International Healthcare Volunteers medical mission.) I travelled as a Junior Volunteer for the 2011 IHCV mission. I helped handle and organize supplies for the medical team. I was also able to distribute dental supplies and toys to children at the KNUST University Hospital Pediatric Ward and at a Kumasi children orphanage. These experiences will help me better communicate with the numerous international students and faculty I hope to meet at BU. The environment full of different opinions and creative minds at Boston University should supply endless possibilities for me to achieve other similar projects and goals. I also hope to contribute to the goals and projects of others.…

It is always great to experience other diversities and their costumes. This can most certainly give me the chance to be very open minded to the whole world. I understand that languages can be very difficult to learn, however, that is exactly what I want. I want to know how my mother felt when she moved to the United States without having any knowledge of the language, how much she had to struggle, and what she did to seek for help. I hope to come back home and tells others about my experiences while study abroad. I intend to impact other students to also consider study abroad as one of their life options while attending their school careers. With my experiences in study abroad, I’m hoping that I will open doors for students whom would want to do this, and that there are many resources to help you reach this dream like this one. Coming from very low income parents also will target a certain group of students who have always desire to take courses in other countries, and I hope to impact them as…
