When people think of Vietnamese, they usually think of the war. Believe it or not, they do have a history that goes way back. Around 333 BC, when the Chinese invaded the area south of the Yang-tse-kiang river, the Lac Viet clan migrated to the South and settled in the area where the Melanesians were living and built up their nation, which has become Vietnam (Introduction to Vietnam). The Vietnamese were believed to belong to a group of “Bach Viet.” This means one hundred clans of Viet in their language. They used to live scattered around what is now Southern China. (Vietventures) They lived in a naturally beautiful place. They had to wander around on different islands and …show more content…
rainforests to get to their destination whether it is an adventure to their home or it was time to go hunt something for dinner. There were also a lot of exotic animals that they encountered. Some of these animals were black bears, alligators, and crocodiles, etc.
Having alligators and crocodiles in certain rivers made the Vietnamese have to be very cautious when bringing water back home. (they had to get it from somewhere and those rivers and lakes had been usually the only place to get water unless they lived in the rainforest. They used homemade buckets to catch the water.) One animal specifically was a bird called the Lac (a type of swan). According to “Vietventures,” Their choice explained the name Lac Viet attributed to their clan. According to “an introduction to Vietnam”, “Vietnam stretches the length of the Indochinese Peninsula and covers a surface area of 128,000 square miles--making it roughly the size of Italy or, in the U.S., New Mexico. China lies to the north, Laos and Cambodia to the west, and the South China Sea to the east.” Because of where they were located, the ancient Vietnamese had very cold winters. Every other time of the year is very hot, especially around summertime.
Although the Vietnamese did go to religious temples many times of the year, most of them claim to be non-religious. However, most of the Vietnamese’ actions relate to and may be influenced by a number of religions. Some of these being Confucianism, Mahayana Buddhism and Taoism.(Vietnamese Culture and Tradition)
As far as fashion goes, there isn’t really anything too special considering the resources the Vietnamese could get ahold of.
They did wear have a hat called the “Non Bai Tho.” The English name for this hat is also the “Poetical Leaf.” These hats were one hundred percent hand-crafted (they didn’t have machines like today). When more people started making them, they were originally worn when planting rice. Eventually, the Vietnamese started to decorate them by putting four big leaves around the top side of the hat. Doing this not only protected them from the heat but it kept hat from deteriorating, as well as keeping the rain out of their face. The story of the that tells about a goddess who gifted one of these cone-like hats to a homeless man who was naked, and overall the hat saved his life. They eventually built a temple to praise her.(Vietnamese Culture and
Tradition)
These are just some of the many interested things about the Vietnamese. With most of the things that they learned or believe, comes a mythology story that had been passed on over the years. Nobody can prove if they are true or not but they are said to believe the stories which is why they praise certain people.
