Violence And Homelessness

Black people are more susceptible to certain factors that increase the risk of developing a mental disorder. Those factors include homelessness and exposure to violence. Homeless people are more likely to develop a mental illness than those living in a home. Black people make up about 40 percent of the homeless population in America (Minorities and Homelessness, 2009). Being exposed to violence such as witnessing someone being shot and killed or being beaten puts a person at greater risk for developing a mental condition like PTSD, depression, or anxiety disorder. For instance, recently, many urban areas in Chicago have witnessed the murder rate increase. Hundreds of people have been severely impacted by the violence and have not received the
