Of the many Significant Documents in the exhibit, the “World War 1 ‘National Crisis Day’ Proclamation, 1917” Document stood out to me the most. This was because it allowed me to realize that Florida was a major key in the war and helping American soldiers survive. This exhibit focused on the health of the nation and established rules for better sanitation. The book talks about improper public sanitation and private sanitation, such as in factories. This document promoted better health, leading to inspections and investigations. In this time in history, factories were being unsanitary, placing rats and other remains from around the factory, in the meat. This poster also reminds me of when women were starting to be empowered because they were the ones who taught and raised the children, so they began to gain a sense of control in their households. Also, during the war, more people died from diseases and bacteria, than from warfare. This poster, which was an establishment of better health, was vital to the survival of Americans so that they were able to learn ways to have better health.
In a nutshell, the Virtual Florida Museum has many documents that assist with this course and allow a more informed view of the events throughout history. Documents such as the national crisis proclamation, the military card of an African-American and the health care poster all provide insight on incidents mentioned in the book. Visiting the Virtual Florida Museum has inspired me to want to learn more history in this course, especially about health care and racial
