Visual Analysis Of The Fiseli The Nightmare

This scary painting is about how some people have beliefs of nightmares, and how some people also have the belief that every nightmare is a message. The Nightmare simultaneously offers both the image of a dream by indicating the effect of the nightmare on the woman,and a dream image in symbolically portraying the vision of sleep. It depicts a sleeping woman draped over the end of a bed with her head hanging down, exposing her long neck. She is surmounted by a something that seems to appear like a demon that looks out at the viewer. The sleeper seems lifeless, and lying on her back, she takes a position believed to encourage nightmares. Her coloration is set against the darker reds, yellows, and ochres of the background. Fuseli used and effect to create strong contrasts between light and shade which is called chiaroscuro. The furniture is contemporary and fashionable, and contains a small table on which rests a mirror, phial, and book. This artwork is scary because of the things portrayed in the painting, the shading, the art style, and the place it took place: I think these reasons are the main reasons why this painting is unsettling, and scary since a lot of viewers aren’t used to this type of art, or these types of emotional feelings. Other interpretations of art i might consider are “Satanic call to Beelzebub in hell”, and “Silence” both by Henry Fuseli. I chose these arts because I think they have a similar texture, and style in creepiness, dark colors, and evil
