Visual Argument Assignment Social media accounts have the ability to connect people from all over the globe. In a perfect world, social media’s purpose is to link its users closer together; to spread culture and make means of communication easier. Nevertheless, multiple artists have been able to depict the negative reality that social media has created. One artist in particular has designed an image that conveys such negatives by tying in key visual components that connect to the interpreter. With the use of object placement, word choice, and irony, this visual suggests the turmoil that social media has established by distracting and damaging the world more then connecting it. This doesn’t only apply to teenagers. Social media has captivated a large number of ages; all of which are becoming distracted from something that was built to connect. Hence the term, “WEAPONS OF MASS DISTRACTION”. The illustrator’s choice of words are what really set the tone of the image. By appealing to the interpreter’s ethos, the illustrator is able to imply the overall meaning of the image while maintaining a trust that what the image means is true. Slightly changing a common phrase, “mass destruction” to “mass distraction” indicates that distraction of social media is causing destruction of our social life, all without the illustrator having to upfrontly say this. The illustrator has gained a sense of credibility, because the play on words with a very recognizable phrase allows the reviewer to connect to an image built off of such disconnect, getting the reviewer to perceive the argument the image overall. The image would not be complete without the text itself, because the space around the bombs would feel too empty, and the message could not get across to as many interpreters without it. The text verifies how social media has been changed from a platform made to socially connect to a weapon that has literally distracted its users from very important things such as simply driving a car safely or spending time with family or
