Between 1994 and 1999, Vladimir Putin became “Sobchak’s first deputy mayor,” and “ was appointed deputy head of management under Boris Yeltsin’s presidential administration,” showed some of his leadership position before he took a big step to become president of Russia (“Vladimir”). Putin showed his leadership when he served his first and second terms as president from 2000 to 2008. At the start of Putin first term, he struggled to become “a public leader allowed voters to project onto Putin their wishes and desires for the future,” such as a better education system, more job opportunities for the adolescents, and for the other countries to respect Russia (McFaul). Vladimir Putin did not allow to run for his third presidential terms by the Russian Constitution. Putin wanted to remain in politics, so he ran for prime minister of Russia instead. Even though Putin was not the president, he was still regarded as the main power in Russia by guiding Russia’s development throughout his year as prime minister. During his time as prime minister, he lower the consumption of alcohol in Russia. After four years as prime minister, he decided to rerun for president in 2012. Vladimir Putin won the election and was named president of Russia again. Many people in his country was against him as they protested during his campaign. The Russian citizens believed that he was corrupted because of all the power that he had in his past terms. During his first year in his third terms, he signed laws that banned United States citizens from adopting Russian children, banned civic groups funded by the United States from operating in Russia, and banned gay people from giving children educational materials about homosexuality. In 2014, Putin played a big role in the Crimean Crisis as Putin “committed to preserving Russia’s territorial integrity” (McFaul).
