Volkswagen India Strategy
For all the talk about companies coming to an emerging market like India and setting up shop, no one has been more passive aggressive then the Volkswagen Group. VW is most famously known for its Beetle – one of the best selling cars of all time at over 21 million units. In a bid to move beyond the Beetle, VW in the 90′s started to acquire many brands and their complete portfolio is quite impressive: Audi, Bentley, Bugatti, Lamborghini, SEAT, Skoda and VW. The VW Group also owns 49.9% of Porsche and set to take 100% ownership in the near future. The linkage between VW and Porsche goes way back, VW was founded by Ferdinand Porsche. Then Ferdinand went on to start Porsche where his son created the iconic 911. Even today the bonds are strong, the Porsche Cayenne and VW Touareg share the same chassis (platform in car speak).
Long Term Commitment
Enough of the history lesson, back to VW’s big bet on India. VW’s foray into India started in 2001 when it launched the Skoda brand and started selling the Octavia. Around 2007, the VW Group also added Audi, Bentley and VW to their Indian product line. These cars were available by importing them individually, however servicing was always an issue since they didn’t have official dealers on the ground in India. In another sign that VW is here for the long haul it opened a massive manufacturing facility in Chakan (near Pune) in 2009 and spent USD $500 million in the process. Towards the end of 2011, VW will add the high-performance brand Lamborghini to the mix. They will most likely unveil the first Lamborghini showrooms when they ship the highly anticipated fire breathing 691hp Aventador to India.

Breakout Hit
In the 4 door mid-luxury segment, the market leader for years has been the Honda City. The break out hit for VW has been the Vento which was introduced in 2010 and already has beaten the Honda City as the number 1 selling car in that segment. The Vento’s success is a combination of Honda lagging and VW bringing the

    1) There are two attractive and distinct segments to which VW cannot attend without damaging its current positioning and brand awareness since it has been seen as an affordable and young brand. These two potential target segments are the baby-boomers and the 18- to 34-year-olds, the last is the brand's current target, achieved through the Drivers Wanted campaign. The baby-boomers segment is constituted by former Beetle users, who are now older and enjoy larger cars like SUV, however the New Beetle brings back several good memories which induce the desire to be back in those youth days creating nostalgic feelings that can be translated into sales. The 18- to 34-year-olds segment is composed by young and adventurous people, who enjoy an active driving experience, who want to be challenged and defy rules. On one hand, we have an older segment that already made some pre-orders and which is willing to pay a premium price, however there is the possibility that the sales will be only the pre-orders since this segment prefers a different type of cars nowadays. On the other hand, we have a younger segment, that is larger and has more potential to influence Beetle's sales in the long run, but it has price constraints.…

This skyrocketing growth of VW shares was not caused by financial indicators of the car producing concern. It was caused by speculative stock-exchange events triggered by declaration of Porsche owners made public on Saturday. Porsche declared intention to raise their share in Volkswagen not to 50% as it was previously planned but to 75%. The investors were mostly shocked by news that Porsche, whose block of shares of Volkswagen was 42,6%, had already bought options on 31,5% of VW ordinary shares.…

At a time when American’s were sceptical about the purchase of imported cars, due to lack of availability of spare partes and costly repairs, heightening Germany’s existing image problem in the market, Volkswagen introduced the Beetle in 1949 which turned out to be a phenomenal success and envisaged a cult-following by the 60s. However due to factors, such as Deutsche Mark appreciation, declining hatchback popularity, new environmental legislations all led to a dramatic decline in the sales of the Volkswagen Beetle. The sales after peaking in 1968, died out completely by 1981. Subsequently with a renewed focus to leverage a no. of value propositions from the old beetle such as strong heritage value, focus on unique driving experience and delivering German technology at an affordable value, the company decided to re-model the Beetle to incorporate design features such as –honest, reliable, simple and original to design the New Beetle. After meeting with success through its initial promotional campaigns, the company’s marketing manager Vanzura had decided to target the Baby bloomers with a proposition aimed at ‘indulging in nostalgia’. While rival companies spent upwards of 100 million dollars towards promotional budget, Vanzura would have to content with 25% of the typical budget size, which would further shrink if Vanzura would have to allocate dollars towards promotional expense of the New Passat which had debuted just 5 months ago. With this constraint on its budgetary resources, the company marketing manager set out to decide the marketing strategy to be followed for…

He did not want to continue VWB’s strategy of cost reduction, capacity downsizing and employee layoffs. With the model of the German technology in mind to produce small, reliable vehicles, he had the vision to format a high performance team and let VWB become the automotive industry leader in sales, profitability, quality and innovation in a sustainable way.…
