Voodoo Doll As Americans, we have the right to freedom of speech. Which basically means we have the right to say whatever we would like to say. Granted, some of the things that we say can be offensive and can hurt others that we are around. Just because we have this right, does not necessarily mean that we can take it all for granted. In culture today, people think that they can get away with almost anything, including with what they say. Also, with everything that we get away with saying, we think it is alright for us just to continue to say it when it is not. In the songs, “Gold Trans Am” by Ke$ha and “Like a Boy” by Ciara, they state what they are going to be doing with guys. Everyone

She talks about how guys do certain things differently and how she wants to do it too. From a personal perspective it seems like she has been done wrong by a guy and is trying to make a point. Her point being, “what if girls acted that way?” For example, to start off her song, Ciara says, “Pull up your pants, just like him take out the trash, just like him getting your cash like him, fast like him girl you wanna act like he did I’m taking ‘bout, security codes on everything on vibrate so your phone don’t ever ring” (Like a Boy, 1-6). There are some things that women just can not do like men can. But when it says in the song, “security codes on everything on vibrate so your phone don’t ever ring,” that just does not apply to men when they “want” to hide something. I mean, there is plenty of people who have security codes on their phones and keep their phones on vibrate and are not hiding anything. I do that all the time and I am not hiding anything from anyone in particular. But if it was I was trying something bad from a loved one I would feel extremely guilty about it. Later on in her song, Ciara says, “Cuz I’m out, four in the morning on he corner rolling doing my own thing what if I had a thing on the side, made you cry would the rules change up or would you that still apply id I played you like a toy?” (Like a Boy, 12-15). What is so wrong about a girl wanting to go out at night to hang out with …show more content…
We do not really think about it much when a guy sings them. With women singing songs like these, we are criticized and talked down upon so much. When guys comes out with songs like these, we think that it is alright because they are guys and that is just how some guys are. But that is just the way of life; we are functioned to criticize everything we think is wrong. We tend to over react to the smallest things and make it this huge deal when it truly is

In this poem “The Mother” it was this mother that had many abortions. This speaker was having an emotional breakdown. For example, “I have heard in the voices of the wind the voices of my dim killed children” (Brooks 1940). When reading ‘’The Mother’’ the speaker talked about her and focused on the children she aborted. But the speaker never mentioned a father. So, after realizing she did not mention a father this question came to an understanding. Why do people have different emotional and physical feelings after abortions? When asking that question by people it means men and women. There is evidence of when it comes to abortions, many people do not think about the men withdrawals. Abortions, which are the discontinuation of a pregnancy before…

The poem ‘The Hurricane’ creates a tense and fearful atmosphere to such an extent that the reader is made to feel as though they have lived through the hurricane themselves. The poet also uses many poetic devices to express this feeling, as well as almost exaggerating the aftermath. All of this creates the vivid atmosphere of the ‘roaring, screaming and returning,’ that was so relentless in the poet’s eyes on the day of the hurricane.…

The poem Medusa explores the theme of jealousy and anger; the poet illustrates this using the extended metaphor of a Greek mythological creature Medusa, whose story describes her as a beautiful maiden that is turned into a hideous creature after being raped by Poseidon. The poet furthermore links this metaphor to the theme of feminism when she describes the women in the poem overpowering the man that hurt her.…

    * Ciara takes a completely different approach to deconstructing gender stereotypes with her video "Like a Boy." This video basically confronts every male stereotype that has been accepted in our society. She discusses the male tendencies to question women about their ware bouts, but refuse to answer when they are asked the same type of questions. Other stereotypes that are addresses include: sleeping around or being "fast," being secretive with money, putting on a front for friends, and lying about ware bouts. This entire song is directed at men. It is asking them how they would like to be treated the way they treat their women. This song is an attempt to make men rethink the way they behave, but it…

Anne Sexton’s Briar Rose (Sleeping Beauty) is a poem which does not only challenges the conventions of the original and traditional fairy tale but also serves as an exposure of a problem which causes a lot of women’s lifelong sufferings. Briar Rose’s courageous revelation of her father’s sexual abuses on her ironically shows reality using a fairy tale, opening the eyes of the readers on the emotional and psychological effects of sexual abuse. The poem shows that even though women are set by to be seen with the princess-like qualities of heroines in fairy tales, within them are painful experiences brought by the highly male-dominated society which will only be exposed by breaking conventions and destroying silence.…

The poem consists out of three short stanzas written in free verse. It is an image poem held together with repetition of sounds. The speaker is standing outside, trying to depict the antagonism between “all Greece” and Helen by describing their interaction. As there is no reference to time or space it seems that the speaker is depicting an image of this antagonism rather than event. The image is the rising hate towards Helen and how it affects her. The first line in the first stanza „All Greece hates” sets the tone of the poem, hateful, bitter tone. The word Greece seems to imply that not only people hate and judge Helen for her part in the war, for Greece is a country, but the whole culture. It shows the intense hatred and condemnation towards Helen especially when being reinforced with words such as “hate” and “reviles”.…

A more positive argument on how the Wrecking Ball video contributes to modern day feminism states that this video is showing a young female who is confident and in control of her own body. This argument ensues that we should be celebrating the empowering decision of Miley to express her own sexual identity, in this song about a breakup. From this argument stems the question as to why women aren’t allowed to express their sexuality as flamboyantly as men do. We are constantly reminded of the male sexual activity and confidence with the iconic Michael Jackson ‘crotch grab’ and the relentless reminders that…

Christina Aguilera’s song “Can’t Hold Us Down” empowers women to take ownership of their bodies without being scared of how society might react to it, while pointing out the double standard between how women are welcomed in society and how men are welcomed. She points out the fact that men can do whatever they want in society without being chastised. For example, men may be praised for their sexual promiscuity, while women would be judge for theirs. The lyrics of Aguilera's song illstartates the prejudice women face when they are projecting their sexuality. Pop culture often supports sex, but still expects young women to act more closed off than their male counterparts due to our society is shaped. In the chorus of the song, Aguilera sings…

Minaj is a self-confessed feminist, which ties in with her celebration of her non-skinny frame. Nicki's skin colour is also a major factor ìn her expectations for this song. Frequently throughout pop culture, female singers have used the black woman's body as an object and a prop. Therefore, for Nicki to display complete control over her body as she sings about her sexual conquests, it is no surprise why the song has received such mixed backlash. As a writer for a feminist blog puts it, “Nicki Minaj is reclaiming a song (Baby Got Back) that was made by a black male rapper who celebrated (but also objectified) Black female bodies.” (Iphis. 'Nicki Minaj's #Anaconda and Reclaiming “Black Girl Sexy.”' battymamzelle.blogspot.ie, 22 Aug. 2014. Web. 3 Oct. 2014.) For many, the idea that a black woman can so openly own her own body is inconceivable, not to mention the fact that Nicki is rapping about her exploits with men as she dances in a provocative manner. Some claim that the video is, in essence, still about pleasing men, while others argue that Nicki is acting on her own terms, which means that she is the one in control, and dancing alluringly as a means by which to enjoy herself. However, the latter claims are completely contradicted upon realising that the song was written, directed, and published by men. It leads the consumer to…
