Throughout life, people are always seeking something, whether it is discovering solutions to satisfy desires or seeking the purpose of life. However, the recognition and fulfillment of one's true self-are the hardest things in the world simply because one always seems certain of him or herself, and is strongly influenced by his or her surroundings. In his essay, “The Power of Context,” Malcolm Gladwell says that human behavior is susceptible to and strongly predisposed by the environment in which they live. He further poses that, "epidemics are sensitive to the surroundings and situation of the places and times in which they transpire." The essay extensively states that the features of one’s current social and physical…

Among the further theoretical challenges pointed out by Garcia-Canclini, I would like to highlight the need “to elaborate, well beyond the Marxist conception of consciousness as reflection and the behaviourist stimulus-response scheme, a theory of how hegemony becomes rooted in everyday life, interiorizing social structures in subjects, converting them into unconscious dispositions, basic schemes of perceptoin, thought, and action, habitus (as Bourdieu put it) that organize the needs of subjects so that they might be congruent with social reprodution (p.…

The theory we chose to discuss in this discussion post is the Routine Activities and Lifestyles Theory. According to Daigle, this theory came about in the 1970’s and was developed by Lawrence Cohen and Marcus Felson (Daigle, 20). According to the textbook, this theory is “a person’s routine activities and lifestyle place them at risk of being victimized. The risk is higher when there are motivated offenders, little to none capable guardianship, and a suitable target” (Daigle, 602). There are obvious lifestyle choices that can lead to victimization. Some of these choices include walking alone at night, being in known dangerous areas, and/or choosing a lifestyle with a pattern.…

Every person in the world has one thing in common and that one thing is death. Not many people want to face the fact that everyone will die at a certain point in time until that time is brought among them. Existentialism is the theory of being a living human individual and that ultimately life is meaningless because the world keeps moving on when death occurs. This theory is prevalent in the novel The Stranger by Albert Camus and the film Office Space by Mike Judge. In The Stranger a shipping clerk named Mersault lives his life without caring about societal standards and he believes that having faith in a higher god is a waste of his time. In Office Space a man named Peter Gibbons is programmer at a software company called Initech, he is fed up with a job and the lifestyle that he is living in. Although the characters in The Stranger and Office Space inflict with different plots and people, they share the same indifference to the world, choose their own path, and accept the consequences of their decisions.…

Dreams play an important role in our lives. Dreams are an opportunity for us to experience a life with no limitations. However, not all dreams are meaningless fiction. Sometimes, a dream can be identical to everyday life. In some cases it is extremely difficult to tell the difference between a dream and reality. Throughout history, studies show that dreams provide an insight into one’s own self. Dreams can show us who we really are and what we want out of life by tapping into our subconscious mind. They have the ability to be inspirational, life changing, and revealing. Certain aspects of the story “Young Goodman Brown” lead us to believe that he is merely dreaming.…
