As the director and dramaturge for a fully mounted production of, Ruby Moon by Matt Cameron for a festival with a focus on Australian society I must select a relevant scene for an audience to promote the entire play. Ruby Moon was written in 2003 by Matt Cameron (1969), a Melbourne playwright who was heavily “influenced by headlines in the newspaper” regarding missing children which sparked many of his plot lines. His plays, in particular Ruby Moon, comment on the notion of a decimated community where there is no longer any communication between neighbours and how the suburbs are now deemed as unsafe and frightening. This is the paradox of Flaming Tree Grove, the street where Ruby Moon sets off to visit her grandmothers and is never seen again.…

Three teenagers have won the opportunity to go to the moon for a week, and this is how it happened. Mia, from Norway, is upset because her parents signed her up for the 2019 Moon Trip “raffle” so to speak, but, the thing is, she didn’t want to go. In the novel Walk Two Moons by Sharon Creech Sal’s father accuses Sal of “trying to catch fish in the air” (pg. 75) because she was trying to get her father to stop seeing Mrs. Cadaver to get her mother to come back. The author uses this idiom to show that Sal is doing something that is a waste of time because it is impossible to catch fish from the air and it is impossible for Sal’s mother to come back. There have been times in my life when I have tried to do something that turned out to be impossible. For example, yesterday I went to the Oktoberfest in Yorba Linda and there was a silent auction. There was a specific item up for bid that I really wanted. It was a one week rental for a fancy house with eight bedrooms and an ocean view…

The 1960’s dealt with many instances of tragedy, but also brought about great technological and social advancements. The assassinations of Martin Luther King, Jr. and John F. Kennedy, the Cuban Missile Crisis, Civil Rights Movement, Cold War and the Vietnam War were all pivotal moments that contributed to define a tumultuous decade preceding Neil Armstrong’s walk on the Moon in 1969. The success of sending two men to walk across the land of another celestial body was more than a large scale science experiment for the United States- it was an affirmation of American ingenuity, it boosted national morale in an uneasy time, and ended the decade on an uplifted note. This work seeks to examine Neil Armstrong’s walk on the Moon, most specifically,…

Why do people spend time worrying about things in the past, when they have so much future ahead of them? In the award winning novel, Walk Two Moons by Sharon Creech, a mysterious note is dropped off on the Winterbottom’s front porch: “In the course of a lifetime, what does is matter?” Through this metaphor, this message is trying to reveal to people that they should not fret the things in life that won’t matter in a few days, months, or the course of a lifetime. Even thinking about events that occurred in the past, waste time in the present and future. Ultimately, this theme has a significant relation to several characters in the novel and the world at large.…

Andy Warhol's Moonwalk exemplifies how pop art took inspiration from cultural trends and in this case from the events of the cold war and the space race. The image envisions the exiting moment when man first stepped on the moon, using a technique known as screen printing to capture the dynamic composition. Moonwalk was painted by Andy Warhol in the year 1987 only months before his death. It is currently located in the Huntsville Museum of Art, near the NASA Marshall Space flight center. The centre theme of the painting depicts Buzz Aldrin standing next to the American flag as capered by Neil Armstrong.…
