Today I am writing a short story titled “Warning: Colour May Fade” by Leah Henderson. In this story, we are at a boarding school where our protagonist, Nivia, takes art. There is competition and Nivia feels the pressure around her. In this competition, students are encouraged to “tell their truth”. My theme is: Representing yourself is something different for everyone. When you represent yourself in art, you feel you can understand yourself better and be who you are. Nivia is eager to win this competition, and so is Ryan. Ryan is desperate to win this, even though she is from a family of famous artists. They are describing exaggeration because Ryan is not a surgeon, but Ryan is very careful, just like a surgeon. Lastly, the literary tool of symbolism contributes to the understanding of my theme. Firstly, “A rainbow of cadmium yellow, magenta, viridian, and other colours split a silhouetted body of dark fabrics” (48). This relates to my theme because it beautifully describes the artwork of Nivia. It describes Nivia and her experiences in a good light. Secondly, “And everyone can see how the moments of my life weave together to create this, determined, certain face.” (65). This relates to my theme because this shows how telling your truth can give you benefits such as confidence and determination. This also shows how “weaving my life together” is symbolism and it represents your life finally coming together after a hard time finding out who you are. The literary tools and devices I have mentioned in my essay fit together in many ways. One of my reasons for this is that they all mention telling your truth, which is my theme. They also all represent finding yourself after a time of hardship and feeling confident in the end after what you have been through. This connects to my life experiences because I am still finding out
