Was Asoka Ruthless Or Enlightened
Asoka was the ruler of the mauryan empire and ruled his empire for decades, until he died in 261 BCE. It is very much argued if Asoka is ruthless or enlightened, but in my perspective Asoka is an intelligent enlightened ruler. The fact that Asoka only did what is right for his empire, thought everyone who did wrong should be forgiven, and gave rich gifts to the poor clearly proves that he was an enlightened ruler.

To start off, Asoka did not want to hurt anyone he just wanted a strong and satisfied empire. When Asoka fought the Kalingas he did not mean to harm anything or anyone he just wanted to boost his economy for his empire. By conquering Kalinga, Asoka’s empire grew stronger. After the fight Asoka felt pity and great remorse.

The second reason why I think Asoka was an enlightened ruler and not a ruthless conqueror because in document E it states that “Today if a hundredth or a thousandth part of those people who were killed or died or were deported when Kalinga was annexed were to suffer…, it would weigh heavily on the mind of the Beloved of the Gods [Asoka].” With this being stated this means that Asoka was very sorry for taking over Kalinga and if it was to happen today he would to be able to forgive himself. This document would help answer the question “Asoka: Ruthless Conqueror or Enlightened Ruler?” because he is wanting forgiveness from the surviving Kalingans for what he did.…

The Romans and Gupta’s emperor had the most control in their government because they did not use a large bureaucracy. The rulers in the Roman and Gupta Empire told their people their power was given to them by the gods so everyone would follow their rule. But the Gupta was not largely centralized so their emperor did not control almost all the power. Unlike Caesar Augustus and his successors who held almost all the power in the empire. The Roman emperors would put their faces on the coins or built statues of them all over the empire to promote their power so everyone followed them.…
